N-acetyl glucosamine - Feed Ingredient

N-acetyl glucosamine (GlcNAc) is a naturally occurring derivative of glucose and a key component of glycosaminoglycans, such as hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate, which are vital for maintaining healthy cartilage, connective tissue, and joint function. It is formed when an acetyl group is attached to glucosamine, resulting in a more stable and less reactive molecule compared to other glucosamine forms. N-acetyl glucosamine can be derived from shellfish chitin or synthesized through fermentation processes.

In equine nutrition, N-acetyl glucosamine is included in joint support and connective tissue supplements. It serves as a substrate for the synthesis of cartilage matrix components and may help support the maintenance and repair of joint tissues. Compared to glucosamine hydrochloride or sulfate, it has different absorption characteristics and may be less dependent on sulfur metabolism. However, research in horses is limited, and while some evidence from other species suggests potential benefits in joint and cartilage health, its efficacy and bioavailability in equine applications remain to be fully established.

The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain N-acetyl glucosamine as an ingredient.
