Oil Seed Meal - Feed Ingredient
Oil seed meal is the protein-rich byproduct that remains after oil is extracted from oil-bearing seeds such as soybean, canola, sunflower, linseed (flaxseed), and cottonseed. It is commonly used in equine feed formulations as a source of plant-based protein. The nutritional composition varies depending on the seed type, with differences in protein, fiber, fat content, and amino acid profiles. Soybean meal and canola meal are examples of high-quality protein sources.
The manufacturing process typically involves mechanical pressing or solvent extraction to remove the oil, followed by grinding into a consistent meal. Heat treatment is often applied to inactivate antinutritional factors such as trypsin inhibitors in soybean meal or gossypol in cottonseed meal.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Oil Seed Meal as an ingredient.
