Puffed Wheat - Feed Ingredient
Puffed Wheat is a processed wheat product created by exposing whole wheat kernels to high heat and pressure. During the process, the moisture inside the kernels rapidly turns into steam, causing the kernels to expand or “puff” up. This rapid expansion alters the structure of the wheat, making it lighter, more porous, and changing its texture compared to the whole grain.
The puffing process also partially gelatinizes the starches within the wheat. This gelatinization modifies the starch structure, which can increase its digestibility and change the way nutrients are released during digestion. The end result is a product that offers a different profile in terms of texture, density, and how it is metabolized, compared to raw wheat kernels.
In equine feeds, puffed wheat is primarily used as an energy source, providing horses with a readily available source of carbohydrates that support exercise or increased activity. Additionally, its modified texture improves palatability and facilitates uniform mixing in compound feeds.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Puffed Wheat as an ingredient.
