Rapeseed Meal - Feed Ingredient

Rapeseed meal is the protein-rich byproduct remaining after the oil has been extracted from rapeseed (Brassica napus), typically through mechanical pressing or solvent extraction. It is used extensively in livestock nutrition due to its relatively high protein content (usually around 34–38%) and availability. The meal contains moderate levels of fiber and a well-balanced amino acid profile, although it is lower in lysine compared to soybean meal.

In equine diets, rapeseed meal can be used as a secondary protein source, though its use is limited due to the presence of glucosinolates and erucic acid in traditional rapeseed varieties. Modern cultivars, known as “canola,” have been selectively bred to contain low levels of these compounds, making canola meal a safer and more common alternative. Glucosinolates can interfere with thyroid function and palatability, so inclusion rates must be controlled.

The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Rapeseed Meal as an ingredient.

Extruded Rapeseed Meal (also known as canola meal) is a source of protein and is low in starch and sugar. It is a byproduct of the extraction of oil from rapeseeds and is fed to many classes of livestock. Extruded refers to the process by which anti-nutritional factors are removed to improve the digestibility of proteins.

Rapeseed meal or canola meal is a high source of protein and is the by-product remaining after the oil is extracted from the rapeseed plant. Canola is a low-erucic acid, low-glucosinate or 00 variety of rapeseed. Low-erucic acid and low-glucosinate varieties of rapeseed are now typically used in livestock feeds. Canola and rapeseed are often interchangeable.
