Saccharin Sodium - Feed Ingredient

Saccharin sodium is the sodium salt form of saccharin, a non-nutritive artificial sweetener. It is several hundred times sweeter than sucrose and is commonly used in feed and supplement formulations to enhance palatability without contributing to caloric content. Saccharin sodium appears as a white, crystalline powder and is highly soluble in water.

In equine nutrition, saccharin sodium is used primarily as a flavor enhancer in oral supplements, medications, or low-sugar formulations where sweetness is desired but sugar content must be minimized. Its stability under heat and pH variation makes it suitable for inclusion in pelleted and extruded feeds, as well as in liquid or paste products.

Saccharin sodium is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) when used within established limits. It is not metabolized by the body and is excreted unchanged in urine.
