Steam Flaked Barley - Feed Ingredient
Steam-flaked barley is a processed form of barley grain created by exposing whole barley kernels to steam followed by rolling them into flat flakes. This heat processing method gelatinizes the starch, making it more digestible for horses and improving the grain’s overall energy availability.
Steam-flaked barley is included in equine feeds as a high-energy cereal grain. It provides fermentable carbohydrates and contributes to the caloric density of the diet. Compared to raw or whole barley, steam-flaked barley is more digestible.
Due to its higher starch content, it should be fed with attention to total non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) intake, particularly in horses sensitive to starch or prone to metabolic issues.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Steam Flaked Barley as an ingredient.
