Triticale - Feed Ingredient
Triticale (× Triticosecale) is a hybrid cereal grain developed by crossing wheat (Triticum) and rye (Secale). It is cultivated for its high yield potential and tolerance to varying environmental conditions. Triticale combines the grain quality of wheat with the hardiness and disease resistance of rye.
In equine nutrition, triticale may be used as a grain ingredient to provide energy through its starch content. It also contains moderate levels of protein and fiber, making it nutritionally comparable to other small grains like barley or oats. However, due to its relatively high non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) content, triticale should be fed cautiously to horses with metabolic concerns.
Triticale can also be used as forage when harvested at the vegetative stage or early heading. It is suitable for grazing or as hay or silage and can offer good palatability and digestible fiber for horses when managed properly.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Triticale as an ingredient.
