Vitamin D Supplement refers to feed-grade sources of Vitamin D, commonly available as Vitamin D₂ (ergocalciferol) or Vitamin D₃ (cholecalciferol). In equine nutrition, Vitamin D₃ is the preferred form, as it is more bioavailable and is the natural form synthesized in the skin when exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in calcium and phosphorus metabolism, aiding in the regulation of bone growth, maintenance, and overall mineral homeostasis.

Horses primarily obtain Vitamin D from sunlight exposure and, to a lesser extent, from forage. However, supplementation may be necessary for horses kept indoors for extended periods, those with limited sun exposure, those that live in Norther Climates, or those with increased nutritional demands.
