Wheat Straw - Feed Ingredient
Wheat Straw is the fibrous residue remaining after the wheat grain has been harvested, consisting primarily of the dried stalks and leaves of the wheat plant (Triticum spp.). It is a byproduct of grain production and is commonly used as a low-cost forage or bedding material in livestock and equine management.
In equine feed formulations, wheat straw is sometimes incorporated to increase indigestible fiber and provide bulk. Its high lignin content makes it poorly digestible, offering minimal nutritional value in terms of energy or protein. However, this indigestible fiber can help regulate gut motility and satiety, especially in diets formulated for weight management or to extend chewing time.
Wheat straw is usually chopped or ground before being included in pelleted feeds or forage extenders.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Wheat Straw as an ingredient.
