Whey protein isolate is a highly refined protein product derived from whey, the liquid by-product of cheese production. It is produced by further processing whey to remove most of the fat and lactose, resulting in a product containing typically 90% or more protein by weight.

In equine nutrition, whey protein isolate may be included in specialty supplements as a high-quality, rapidly digestible protein source. It offers a complete amino acid profile, including high levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) such as leucine, isoleucine, and valine.
