Zinc - Feed Ingredient

Zinc is an essential trace mineral required for numerous physiological functions in horses, including enzyme activity, immune function, skin and hoof integrity, and protein metabolism. It plays a critical role in cellular processes such as wound healing, antioxidant defense, and the synthesis of keratin, a structural protein found in hooves and hair. Zinc is commonly added to equine feed formulations in inorganic forms such as zinc oxide or zinc sulfate, as well as organic forms like zinc chelates and proteinates, which may offer improved bioavailability.

In equine nutrition, zinc is particularly important for hoof and coat health, as deficiencies can lead to poor hoof quality, slow wound healing, and dull coat appearance. It also works in balance with other trace minerals, such as copper, to maintain proper metabolic function. While zinc deficiency can result in growth impairments and immune dysfunction, excessive zinc intake can interfere with copper absorption, leading to secondary deficiencies.
