Historical aspects of Potomac horse fever in Ontario (1924-2010).
The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne    October 25, 2013   Volume 54, Issue 6 565-572
Baird JD, Arroyo LG.In the summer of 1924 Dr. Frank W. Schofield conducted investigations into an endemic disease of horses in the Kent and Essex counties of Ontario. According to farmers in these counties the disease had existed in this region for at least 50 years previously. The clinical, pathological, histopathological, and epidemiological findings outlined in Schofield's detailed report strongly suggest that this endemic disease was what was designated in 1979 as "Potomac horse fever" (PHF). This assumption is further substantiated by transmission experiments involving horses and laboratory animals that were...

Pequito M, Amory H, de Moffarts B, Busoni V, Serteyn D, Sandersen C.The effects of norepinephrine (NOR) infusion on hemodynamic alterations induced with sedative doses of acepromazine (ACP) were evaluated. Infusion of NOR at 1 μg/kg body weight (BW)/minute for 15 min was administered to 5 standing horses 45 min (T45) after intravenous injection of ACP at 0.1 mg/kg BW. Systolic arterial blood pressure (SAP) and hemodynamic parameters were evaluated on the median artery. Parameters were evaluated every 5 min from 45 to 65 min (T65) at 75 (T75), 90 (T90), and 105 (T105) minutes after ACP administration, and the vessel's surface (SURF), diameter (DIAM), circumfer...
Successful medical management of intra-abdominal abscesses in 4 adult horses.
The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne    August 2, 2013   Volume 54, Issue 2 157-161
Berlin D, Kelmer G, Steinman A, Sutton GA.Four adult horses with large intra-abdominal abscesses, suspected to be complications of strangles, were treated with systemic antibiotics alone and made a full recovery. The 100% survival rate is significantly better than other reported survival rates. The median duration of treatment (35 days) was shorter than in most previous reports. This study suggests that penicillin G can be used for successful treatment of strangles associated intra-abdominal abscesses in horses. Quatre chevaux adultes avec des abcès intra-abdominaux de grande taille, suspectés d’être des complications de la gour...
Jugular thrombophlebitis in horses: a review of fibrinolysis, thrombus formation, and clinical management.
The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne    July 3, 2013   Volume 54, Issue 1 65-71
Dias DP, de Lacerda Neto JC.Thrombophlebitis of the jugular vein is commonly observed in horses, particularly during intensive care, and leads to local and systemic inflammatory responses as well as head and neck circulatory impairment. Thrombolytic therapy is widely used in human practice with the aim of thrombus dissolution and recanalization of the injured vessels. There are similarities between human and horse coagulation and fibrinolytic processes. This review examines the fibrinolytic system, thrombus formation, and the clinical management of jugular thrombophlebitis, including thrombolytic therapy. There is eviden...

Citrated equine blood collected from 26 normal horses was processed by 4 methods: blood collection tubes centrifuged at 1200 and 2000 × g, 50-mL conical tube, and a commercial system. White blood cell (WBC), red blood cell (RBC), and platelet counts and mean platelet volume (MPV) were determined for whole blood and PRP, and aerobic and anaerobic cultures were performed. Mean platelet concentrations ranged from 1.55- to 2...
Development of osteochondrosis in Lusitano foals: a radiographic study.
The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne    April 2, 2013   Volume 53, Issue 10 1079-1084
Baccarin RY, Pereira MA, Roncati NV, Bergamaschi RR, Hagen SC.This study aimed to detect, by radiographic examination, the evolution of osteochondral lesions in the tarsocrural and femoropatellar joints of Lusitano foals. Within 1 month of age, 76.08% of foals had radiographic signs of osteochondrosis, but only 16.20% had lesions at 18 months. The radiographic signs resolved by 5 mo of age in most foals, but some cases that involved either joint, were not resolved until 12 mo of age. It is thought that the "age of no return" is 5 mo for the tarsocrural and 8 mo for the femoropatellar joint but this study demonstrated regression of osteochondral lesions i...

Anderson SL, Blackford JT, Kelmer SG.This study describes the outcome and complications in horses that had a closed, one-stage, stapled, functional, end-to-end (COSFE) jejuno-ileal anastomosis (JIA) following resection of compromised small intestine. Medical records were reviewed to identify all horses that had a COSFE JIA performed during exploratory laparotomy and to determine post-operative complications and final outcome. All 5 horses that were identified had successful COSFE JIA with resection of various amounts of distal jejunum and proximal ileum. Post-operative ileus occurred in 1 of the 5 horses. All horses survived at l...
Near-fatal misuse of medical tape around an endotracheal tube connector during inhalation anesthesia in a horse.
The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne    March 2, 2013   Volume 53, Issue 9 978-982
Gregson R, Clutton RE.A 7-year-old gelded Irish sports horse weighing 650 kg was anesthetized on 2 consecutive days for lavage of a septic right radio-carpal joint. On both occasions the endotracheal tube connector, which had been bound in medical tape to produce an airtight seal, functioned as a unidirectional valve during mechanical ventilation, retarding expiration, imposing positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP), and probably continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). The equipment dysfunction was not identified on either occasion despite close inspection prompted by progressive increases in airway pressure a...
