A dose of 2 g. xylose/Kg. body-weight is required to produce a maximum plasma xylose level of 30 mg./100ml. after two hours. There are limitations to the procedure being used as a routine clinical screening test of small intestinal dysfunction in the horse. A sudden loss of fertility with the finding of increased numbers of abnormal sperm indicated degeneration of the seminiferous epithelium. Based on the results of the physical examination and analysis of fluid aspirated from a fluctuant portion of the swelling, a tentative diagnosis of haematocoele was made. Unilateral castration was performed. Periodic examination of the stallion's semen for eight months after surgery indicated recovery of normal spermatogenesis in the remaining testis.
