PloS one    July 3, 2018   Volume 13, Issue 7 e0199521 doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0199521
González Medina S, Hyde C, Lovera I, Piercy RJ.Hypoglycin A (HGA) toxicity, following ingestion of material from certain plants, is linked to an acquired multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency known as atypical myopathy, a commonly fatal form of equine rhabdomyolysis seen worldwide. Whilst some plants are known to contain this toxin, little is known about its function or the mechanisms that lead to varied HGA concentrations between plants. Consequently, reliable tools to detect this amino acid in plant samples are needed. Analytical methods for HGA detection have previously been validated for the food industry, however, these technique...

Doping control analysis of 121 prohibited substances in equine hair by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.
Journal of pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis    June 1, 2018   Volume 158 189-203 doi: 10.1016/j.jpba.2018.05.043
Wong JKY, Choi TLS, Kwok KY, Lei ENY, Wan TSM.Equine hair is becoming an increasingly popular biological matrix for doping control of horse sports; one of the reasons for this is the significantly longer detection window hair can offer. Hair analysis opens up the opportunity for longitudinal monitoring of drug exposure which would otherwise not be possible with the more traditional and common biological matrices, such as urine and blood. As such, there is a need for more multi-target screening methods covering a broad range of prohibited substances in equine hair at the required sensitivities for equine doping control. This paper describe...

BMC evolutionary biology    May 16, 2018   Volume 18, Issue 1 70 doi: 10.1186/s12862-018-1192-3
Tong KJ, Duchêne DA, Duchêne S, Geoghegan JL, Ho SYW.Phylogenetic analysis of DNA from modern and ancient samples allows the reconstruction of important demographic and evolutionary processes. A critical component of these analyses is the estimation of evolutionary rates, which can be calibrated using information about the ages of the samples. However, the reliability of these rate estimates can be negatively affected by among-lineage rate variation and non-random sampling. Using a simulation study, we compared the performance of three phylogenetic methods for inferring evolutionary rates from time-structured data sets: regression of root-to-tip...

Stability of pentobarbital in soil.
Journal of environmental science and health. Part. B, Pesticides, food contaminants, and agricultural wastes    December 29, 2017   Volume 53, Issue 3 207-213 doi: 10.1080/03601234.2017.1406714
Bagsby C, Saha A, Goodin G, Siddiqi S, Farone M, Farone A, Kline PC.Intravenous injection of barbiturates, particularly pentobarbital (5-ethyl-5-pentan-2-yl-1,3-diazinane-2,4,5-trione), is a widely used method to euthanize large animals such as horses. However, one concern with this method is the fate of pentobarbital after the disposal of the carcass. As tissues decompose, pentobarbital may leach into the soil and from there migrate to groundwater. A method using methanol extraction, solid phase concentration, and liquid chromatography (LC/MS) has been developed to measure pentobarbital in soils. Recovery of pentobarbital from soil averaged approximately 85% ...
