Topic:Animal Studies

Animal studies involving horses encompass a range of research focused on understanding equine biology, behavior, and health. These studies often investigate various aspects of horse physiology, genetics, nutrition, and disease pathology. Researchers utilize animal studies to explore the effects of different treatments, management practices, and environmental factors on horse welfare and performance. The findings from such studies contribute to the development of improved care strategies and health interventions. This page gathers peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the methodologies, findings, and implications of animal studies conducted on horses, providing insights into their application in advancing equine science.
Functional and morphologic pathology of equine aortic insufficiency.
Pathologia veterinaria    January 1, 1966   Volume 3, Issue 2 137-158 doi: 10.1177/030098586600300203
Bishop SP, Cole CR, Smetzer DL.Twelve horses and 3 mules with grade II or louder prolonged diastolic murmurs were selected for functional and histopathologic study. Aortic insufficiency was demonstrated in all mules and in all except two horses on the basis of murmurs, jet lesions and/or pathologic and incompetent valve cusps. In 15 control animals lesions resulting in aortic insufficiency were not found. A thick fibrous band was present on all aortic valve cusps judged to be definitely insufficient. This band occurred at the line of valvular closure, parallel to the free edge, and allowed eversion of the peripheral portio...

Cell and Solution Velocity Constants for the Reaction CO + Hb –> COHb at Different Temperatures in Mammals with Different Red Cell Sizes.
The Journal of general physiology    November 1, 1965   Volume 49, Issue 2 199-220 doi: 10.1085/jgp.49.2.199
Holland RA.Using a double beam stopped-flow apparatus, measurements were made of the velocity constant of the reaction CO + Hb --> COHb in solution and in the red cells of human beings, rabbits, horses, and goats. The solution constant (l') at 37 degrees C for human beings was 362 mM(-1) sec.(-1); in other species l' was somewhat lower. Two rabbits, despite having apparently identical hemoglobins had significantly different values for l'. The energy of activation (E) of l' was between 8 and 11 kcal/mole in all cases. The cell reaction constant (l'(c)) at 37 degrees was between 61 and 73 mM(-1) sec.(-1...
