Four intratumoural injections were given and the tumours were illuminated daily during 25...
Age-related morphometry of equine incisors.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    January 19, 2000   Volume 46, Issue 10 633-643 doi: 10.1046/j.1439-0442.1999.00261.x
Muylle S, Simoens P, Lauwers H.In the present study the age-related morphological characteristics of 948 equine incisors were investigated. After extraction, total incisival length and root length were measured at the vestibular side of the teeth. Equine incisors reach their maximal length 2-3 years after eruption. Notwithstanding severe occlusal wear, this maximal length is maintained during most of the horses' life due to prolonged root formation. Root formation, at the rate of 2.5 mm per year, starts at the age of 5-6 years and continues until the age of 17. As the root of the incisor develops, its apical foramen narrows...
Equine sarcoid tumour treated by autogenous tumour vaccine.
Anticancer research    January 12, 2000   Volume 19, Issue 4C 3367-3374
Kinnunen RE, Tallberg T, Stenbäck H, Sarna S.Twenty-one horses with sarcoid tumours were treated by bio-immunotherapy using autogenous vaccines during 1991-1997. At operation the base of the tumour was left in the skin and autovaccines were made from extirpated tumour tissue by polymerization. The horses thus formed their own internal control group. One of 12 horses having a primary tumour, and four of 9 horses suffering recurrent tumours, prior to bio-immunotherapy, developed single recurrences. Four of these five horses suffering recurrence were treated anew, leading to remission. Disease-free intervals were longer for primary (P = 0.0...

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    January 11, 2000   Volume 217, Issue 10 1522-1525 doi: 10.2460/javma.2000.217.1522
Facemire PR, Chilcoat CD, Sojka JE, Adams SB, Irizarry AR, Weirich WE, Morisset SS, Dutweiler VA.A 7-year-old warmblood mare was referred because of a respiratory tract disorder; pulmonary granular cell tumor was diagnosed. Pulmonary granular cell tumor is a locally invasive but rare type of tumor with low metastatic potential. The entire right lung was resected to ensure removal of all neoplastic tissue. The horse recovered well and has minimal difficulties functioning with one lung. Most of these tumors are diagnosed during postmortem examination. To our knowledge, this is the first report of pulmonary granular cell tumor treated by complete lung resection in a horse.

Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 2000   Issue 56 493-498
Hinrichs K, Betschart RW, McCue PM, Squires EL.Mares with preovulatory follicles >33 mm in diameter were administered hCG and were randomly assigned for aspiration of the dominant follicle at 24 h or 35 h after hCG administration. Oocytes recovered at 24 h were cultured for 12 h before transfer and oocytes recovered at 35 h were cultured for 1 h. Oocytes were transferred by flank laparotomy to the oviduct of the same mare, or to the oviduct of another oocyte donor. Recipient mares were inseminated before and after transfer. The oocyte recovery rates at 24 h and 35 h after hCG administration were not significantly different (10/15 (66%) ...
Oviductal insemination of mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 2000   Issue 56 499-502
McCue PM, Fleury JJ, Denniston DJ, Graham JK, Squires EL.A technique was developed for oviductal insemination of mares, in which a small number of motile spermatozoa are deposited directly into the oviduct. Pregnancy rates in mares inseminated by traditional intrauterine artificial insemination were compared with rates in mares inseminated by oviductal insemination. Fifteen mares were inseminated with 5 x 10(8) progressively motile spermatozoa by intrauterine artificial insemination, and 14 mares were inseminated with 5 x 10(4) progressively motile spermatozoa by oviductal insemination. Pregnancy rates in mares inseminated by intrauterine artificial...
Effect of oestradiol on LH secretion and pituitary responsiveness to GnRH in ovariectomized mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 2000   Issue 56 227-237
Greaves HE, Porter MB, Sharp DC.Long-term ovariectomized Pony mares were treated with oestradiol (0.2-5.0 mg; i.m.) at 12 h intervals for 10 days. Blood samples were collected by jugular venepuncture three times a day throughout the experiment and additional blood samples were collected at 15 min intervals for 12 h on days 0 and 10 (sampling periods 1 and 2, respectively). There were significant effects of oestradiol treatment (P < 0.05) and oestradiol treatment x day (P < 0.0001) on the mean LH concentrations each day. Regression analysis of LH time trends each day indicates that there is heterogeneity (P < 0.001) ...
