Topic:Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are a class of steroid hormones that are commonly used in equine medicine for their anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. These compounds mimic the effects of hormones produced by the adrenal cortex and are administered to manage a variety of conditions, including allergic reactions, joint inflammation, and respiratory disorders in horses. Common corticosteroids used in equine practice include dexamethasone, prednisolone, and triamcinolone. Their application and dosage require careful consideration due to potential side effects, such as laminitis and immune suppression. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the pharmacology, therapeutic applications, and potential risks associated with corticosteroid use in horses.
Blood steroid concentrations in domestic Mongolian horses. Haffner JC, Fecteau KA, Eiler H, Tserendorj T, Hoffman RM, Oliver JW.Traditionally, analysis of blood cortisol alone has been used to evaluate adrenal function. Currently, multisteroid analyses are considered more informative than analysis of a single hormone to assess adrenal function. The objective of the present research was to create a database for steroid reference values for domestic Mongolian horses. Seven adrenal steroid levels were determined in the blood of 18 colts, 34 stallions, 25 geldings, 17 fillies, and 29 mares. Results were as follows (lowest and highest group median, in nanograms per milliliter): progesterone: <0.030 (fillies), 4.30 (mares...

Journal of veterinary internal medicine    June 24, 2010   Volume 24, Issue 5 1153-1157 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-1676.2010.0554.x
Pusterla N, Hussey SB, Mapes S, Johnson C, Collier JR, Hill J, Lunn DP, Wilson WD.Recrudescence of latent equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) with subsequent viral shedding via nasal secretions is a potential source of infection for susceptible horses and has been implicated in outbreaks occurring in closed populations. Objective: To describe the viral kinetics of reactivated EHV-1 in blood and nasal secretions from latently infected horses after administration of corticosteroids, and to study the infectious nature of reactivated EHV-1 to sentinel horses. Methods: Eight healthy horses. Methods: Four horses infected 4 months previously with EHV-1 received dexamethasone on 5 consecu...
Efficacy of oral prednisolone and dexamethasone in horses with recurrent airway obstruction in the presence of continuous antigen exposure.
Equine veterinary journal    June 9, 2010   Volume 42, Issue 4 316-321 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.2009.00022.x
Leclere M, Lefebvre-Lavoie J, Beauchamp G, Lavoie JP.Orally administered prednisolone and dexamethasone are used commonly in the treatment of recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) in horses. However, the efficacy of prednisolone in improving pulmonary function during continuous antigen exposure has not been evaluated critically and there is little evidence supporting the efficacy of low-dose oral dexamethasone in the same conditions. Objective: Oral prednisolone and dexamethasone improve pulmonary function in RAO under conditions of continuous antigen exposure, and dexamethasone is more effective than prednisolone at commonly used dosages. Methods:...
Laminitis and the equine metabolic syndrome.
The Veterinary clinics of North America. Equine practice    June 9, 2010   Volume 26, Issue 2 239-255 doi: 10.1016/j.cveq.2010.04.004
Johnson PJ, Wiedmeyer CE, LaCarrubba A, Ganjam VK, Messer NT.Although much has been written about laminitis in the context of its association with inflammatory processes, recognition is growing that most cases of laminitis examined by veterinarians in private practice are those associated with pasture grazing, obesity, and insulin resistance (IR). The term 'endocrinopathic laminitis' has been adopted to classify the instances of laminitis in which the origin seems to be more strongly associated with an underlying endocrinopathy, such as either IR or the influence of corticosteroids. Results of a recent study suggest that obesity and IR represent the mos...
Corticosteroid-associated laminitis.
The Veterinary clinics of North America. Equine practice    June 8, 2010   Volume 26, Issue 2 277-285 doi: 10.1016/j.cveq.2010.04.001
Bailey SR.A direct causal association between corticosteroid use and laminitis has yet to be proven scientifically, and there have been few studies specifically addressing this aspect. New evidence, however, is improving the understanding of the causes of laminitis, particularly related to endocrine factors. The focus of this article is discussing the circumstances under which steroids might cause this condition.
Cutaneous vasculitis in equines: a retrospective study of 72 cases.
Veterinary dermatology    February 25, 2010   Volume 20, Issue 5-6 600-606 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-3164.2009.00827.x
White SD, Affolter VK, Dewey J, Kass PH, Outerbridge C, Ihrke PJ.Cutaneous vasculitis was identified by histopathological findings in 72 equines. The most frequent clinical findings were crusts/scales and oedema of the legs with the most common underlying disease being photo-aggravated dermatitis. Common laboratory findings were anaemia, neutrophilia, hyperglycaemia and hyperglobulinaemia. Histopathological patterns were most commonly cell-poor and lymphocytic/histiocytic. While statistically supported treatment recommendations could not be made due to the large numbers of confounding factors, trimethoprim-sulfa antibiotics, corticosteroids, and/or resoluti...
Simplified method to measure glucocorticoid metabolites in faeces of horses.
Veterinary research communications    February 25, 2010   Volume 34, Issue 2 185-195 doi: 10.1007/s11259-010-9344-y
Flauger B, Krueger K, Gerhards H, Möstl E.Glucocorticoids or their metabolites can be measured in several body fluids or excreta, including plasma, saliva, urine and faeces. In recent years the measurement of glucocorticoid metabolites (GCMs) in faeces has gained increasing attention, because of its suitability for wild populations. In horses, however, the group-specific enzyme immunoassay described so far has a limited practicability due to its complex extraction procedure. Therefore, we tested the applicability of other enzyme immunoassays for glucocorticoid metabolites. The present study clearly proved that an enzyme immunoassay (E...
Mastocytoma in the common carpal sheath of the digital flexor tendons of a horse.
Australian veterinary journal    February 13, 2010   Volume 88, Issue 1-2 20-24 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.2009.00534.x
Leadbeater JC, Gutierrez-Nibeyro SD, Brown JA.A 13-year-old Morgan gelding was examined for right forelimb lameness and tenosynovitis of the right common carpal sheath of the digital flexor tendons. The horse had moderate right forelimb lameness at the trot and marked effusion of the right common carpal sheath of the digital flexor tendons. Ultrasonographic examination revealed a soft tissue mass within the proximal pouch of the affected tendon sheath, located adjacent to the distal physis of the radius. Cytology and culture of the fluid revealed a sterile, eosinophilic tenosynovitis. Tenoscopic exploration confirmed the presence of a cap...
MMP-mediated collagen breakdown induced by activated protein C in equine cartilage is reduced by corticosteroids.
Journal of orthopaedic research : official publication of the Orthopaedic Research Society    September 25, 2009   Volume 28, Issue 3 370-378 doi: 10.1002/jor.21001
Garvican ER, Vaughan-Thomas A, Redmond C, Gabriel N, Clegg PD.The plasma serine protease activated protein C (APC) is synthesized by human chondrocytes at sites of pathological cartilage fibrillation. APC levels are increased in osteoarthritis (OA) synovial fluid, and in vitro APC has been shown to synergize with interleukin-1beta (IL-1) to promote degradation from ovine cartilage. A model of equine cartilage degradation was established and used to explore corticosteroid activities. Intraarticular corticosteroids are a commonly prescribed treatment for joint disease, however their role in disease modification remains unclear. APC synergized with IL-1 or ...
Clinical and subclinical endometritis in the mare: both threats to fertility.
Reproduction in domestic animals = Zuchthygiene    August 13, 2009   Volume 44 Suppl 3 10-22 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0531.2009.01485.x
LeBlanc MM, Causey RC.Endometritis, a major cause of mare infertility arising from failure to remove bacteria, spermatozoa and inflammatory exudate post-breeding, is often undiagnosed. Defects in genital anatomy, myometrial contractions, lymphatic drainage, mucociliary clearance, cervical function, plus vascular degeneration and inflamm-ageing underlie susceptibility to endometritis. Diagnosis is made through detecting uterine fluid, vaginitis, vaginal discharge, short inter-oestrous intervals, inflammatory uterine cytology and positive uterine culture. However, these signs may be absent in subclinical cases. Hyper...
Effects of dermal dexamethasone application on ACTH and both basal and ACTH-stimulated cortisol concentration in normal horses.
Journal of veterinary pharmacology and therapeutics    July 21, 2009   Volume 32, Issue 4 379-387 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2885.2008.01054.x
Abraham G, Allersmeier M, Gottschalk J, Schusser GF, Hoppen HO, Ungemach FR.There are no data available regarding the systemic (adverse) effects which might be induced by topical/dermal glucocorticoids (GCs) application in the horse. Besides their widespread use for the treatment of a variety of peripheral inflammatory disorders such as atopic dermatitis, eczemas or arthritis in the horse, their surreptitious application has become a concern in doping cases in competition/performance horses. Assessing both basal and ACTH-stimulated plasma cortisol as well as basal ACTH concentrations following application of dexamethsone-containing dermal ointment is necessary to dete...
