Open peritoneal drainage in horses with experimentally induced peritonitis. Peritonitis was induced in 12 horses by median celiotomy and 1 hour of small intestinal ischemia. Pulmonary capillary pressure during exercise in horses. The object of this study was to relate pulmonary capillary pressure to arterial and wedge pressures during exercise. Pulmonary vascular pressures were measured in six standardbred horses exercising at speeds equivalent to 75, 90, and 100% of maximal heart rate. Detection of quinine and its metabolites in horse urine by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. After oral administration of quinine sulfate to a thoroughbred mare, seven urine samples were obtained over a 45.5 h period. Using gas chromatography -electron impact ionization and positive-ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry, quinine and five putative metabolites were detected and tentatively identified in enzyme-hydrolysed post-administration urine; all metabolites involved some form of oxidation. The parent drug could be detected for about 16 h and some phase I biotransformation products for up to 40 h post-administration.
Ubiquitin expression in degenerating axons of equine cervical compressive myelopathy. Neuropathologic examination revealed axonal swelling and breakdown leading to Wallerian degeneration of affected myelinated nerve fibers in the spinal cord white matter of four young horses with equine cervical compressive myelopathy. Immunohistochemical reactions for the cell stress protein ubiquitin revealed an enhanced presence in the swollen axons, which may reflect a role for ubiquitin in the neuronal catabolic process of axonal compression and degeneration in this myelopathy.
Equine adenocarcinomas of the large intestine with osseous metaplasia. Large intestinal adenocarcinoma with osseous metaplasia was diagnosed in two horses, a 15-year-old standard bred gelding and a 9-year-old Haflinger mare. Clinically, both animals had displayed weight loss and anaemia. A presumptive diagnosis of abdominal neoplasia was made and the horses were humanely killed. The size and the orientation of the bone salt (mineral) crystals in the cranial and caudal zones in the transverse midshaft section of the equine radius were investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Cardiopulmonary effects of medetomidine in sheep and in ponies. Medetomidine was administered intravenously to six sheep at 5, 10 and 20 micrograms kg-1 and to one horse and four ponies at 5 and 10 micrograms kg-1.
