Changes in mammary development and composition of secretion during late pregnancy in the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 555-561
Peaker M, Rossdale PD, Forsyth IA, Falk M.Small samples of mammary secretion were taken for analysis from Thoroughbred mares during the last 3 weeks of pregnancy up to the time of foaling. The concentrations of sodium and chloride decreased while those of lactose, potassium, citrate, phosphate, calcium, magnesium and protein increased. The time-course of these changes showed marked variation between animals. The concentration of whey proteins began to increase about 10 days before parturition. The appearance of the secretion and the size of the mammary glands increased in the last few days of pregnancy. It is suggested that the concen...

Sources of variation in response intervals after prostaglandin treatment in mares with functional corpora lutea.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 229-235
Loy RG, Buell JR, Stevenson W, Hamm D.Sixty-two non-cycling mares were classified according to the size of largest follicles at the time of treatment with Prostalene, an analogue of prostaglandin (PG) F-2 alpha. Although oestrus occurred in only 77.4% of mares, 98.4% ovulated at an average of 6.8 days after treatment. Greatest variance of interval to ovulation was observed in mares having follicles greater than or equal to 40 mm at the time of treatment. This was due to regression of large follicles about one-third of the time and later ovulation of a succeeding follicle. This resulted also in greatest uncertainty of prediction of...
[Myocardial changes following experimental protein sensitization].
Arkhiv patologii    January 1, 1979   Volume 41, Issue 9 17-22
Frolov VA, Derx H, Riguer P.Guinea pigs were sensitized by three subcutaneous injections of 0.1 ml native horse serum at 2-day intervals, 21 days after the third injection the animals developed marked sensitization to this antigen which was manifested by anaphylactic reaction to the subcutaneous challenge with this antigen. At this time, the myocardium of the sensitized animals showed signs of extra- and intracellular oedema, a sharp increase in the number of lysosomes, damage of their membranes, 2 1/2 months after sensitization the animals showed no anaphylactic reaction to the challenge dose of the antigen. There were ...
Hybridization of bovine papilloma virus type 1 and type 2 DNA to DNA from virus-induced hamster tumors and naturally occurring equine tumors.
Intervirology    January 1, 1979   Volume 11, Issue 4 227-233 doi: 10.1159/000149038
Lancaster WD, Theilen GH, Olson C.DNAs from bovine papilloma virus(BPV)-induced hamster tumors and from equine connective tissue tumors of unknown etiology were examined for BPV DNA sequences by molecular hybridization. DNA from two distinct classes of BPV (type 1 and type 2) was labeled in vitro and used as probes. Analysis of DNA-DNA reassociation kinetics indicated that both virus types were capable of tumor induction in the hamster. DNA isolated from 6 of 7 equine tumors accelerated the reassociation of the BPV DNA probes. BPV type 1 or type 2 DNA hybridized extensively to DNA from 3 tumors, while 3 other tumors contained ...

Epidemiological observations on contagious equine metritis in Kentucky, 1978.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 343-349
Bryans JT, Hendricks JB.Contagious equine metritis, introduced by importation of 2 comtaminated stallions from France, affected 54 Thoroughbred brood mares during the 1978 breeding season in Kentucky. The infection was diagnosed bacteriologically and by the use of a complement fixation test. Although lateral spread to stallions, and probably to a few mares, occurred through human agency in the breeding sheds of 2 stud farms, control measures instituted early in the epidemic confined the disease to brood mares bred by stallion on only these farms.
Preparation and some properties of a dimeric form (S-S) of horse muscle acylphosphatase.
International journal of peptide and protein research    January 1, 1979   Volume 14, Issue 3 227-233 doi: 10.1111/j.1399-3011.1979.tb01929.x
Stefani M, Berti A, Camici G, Manao G, Cappugi G, Ramponi G.The use of sodium selenite as a catalyst in the presence of oxygen was a suitable technique to obtain in good yield an interchain S-S dimeric form of horse muscle acylphosphatase. The dimer so obtained possesses kinetic properties very similar to those of the native enzyme. On the other hand the dimer has shown a generally lower stability in respect of the thermal inactivation, particularly in the acidic environment, to the lyophilization and to the proteolytic attack. As regards the 8 M urea inactivation, the dimer is not able to completely regain its activity by dilution, showing a behaviour...

Morphology of spermatozoa in semen from stallions of normal fertility.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 39-45
Bielaล„ski W, Kaczmarski F.Semen samples were collected from 3 fertile stallions by means of an 'open' artificial vagina and examined under scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The stallion spermatozoon has many features in common with that of other mammals but differs specifically in that it has an asymmetric head, an abaxial position of the tail and an acrosome of small volume. The presence of microtubules in the neck is also a characteristic of stallion spermatozoa.
Ultrastructural events in horse gonadal morphogenesis.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 479-485
Merchant-Larios H.The establishment and sexual differentiation of the gonads of horse embryos were studied using high-resolution techniques. The most dramatic observation is the early cytodifferentiation of the somatic cells into steroidogenic cells which takes place before sexual differentiation of the gonads. A unique morphogenetic pattern is established during this process: the seminiferous cords of the testis are completely segregated from the steroidogenic tissue by a basal lamina, while in the medulla of the ovary, steroidogenic cells differentiate inside the epithelial cords which contain germ cells. Thi...

[Complement fixation reaction studies in rhinopneumonitis of horses].
Veterinarno-meditsinski nauki    January 1, 1979   Volume 16, Issue 8 78-84
Tatarov G, Martinov S, Panova M.It was established that the complement binding reaction (CBR) is a suitable and very fast method for horse rhino-pneumonitis diagnostics. Cell cultural virus produced in cell cultures of pig kidneys was used as antigen. The antigen lots tested have no anticomplementary properties. Highest complement binding activity was evident in the non-diluted antigen, which discovered specific antibodies in immune serums. The CBR specificity was tested by the aid of homologous and heterologous serums and antigens. The titers of complement binding antibodies in the serums of 255 horses recovered from the di...
Effect of diethylstilboestrol on the relationship between LH, PMSG and progesterone during pregnancy in the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 465-470
Nett TM, Pickett BW.Two studies were conducted to determine the relationship between LH and progesterone and between PMSG and progesterone during pregnancy in mares. In the first, samples of jugular blood were collected daily from 7 mares from the first day of oestrus until Day 28 of pregnancy, and in the second, samples were collected weekly from 14 mares from Day 35 of gestation until parturition. In an attempt to prolong secretion of progesterone from accessory corpora lutea, 7 of these 14 mares were injected with increasing doses (2--10 mg) of diethylstilboestrol (DES) between Days 84 and 142 of gestation. Th...
Treatment of ringworm in horses with natamycin.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1979   Volume 11, Issue 1 36-38 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1979.tb01294.x
Oldenkamp EP.A suspension based on the antibiotic, natamycin, was applied by sponging to 83 horses of various breeds and ages with signs of clinical ringworm. A number of different causative agents were involved of which Trichophyton equinum was the most common. Treatment successfully eliminated the disease within 4 weeks. After treatment the recovered animals did not show any evidence of re-infection for up to 6 months. The mycological clearance rate was 97 per cent and apart from the efficacy against ringworm, the preparation had the advantage of being non-irritant and odourless. It was also useful for t...
Epidemiology of equine upper respiratory tract disease on standardbred racetracks. Sherman J, Mitchell WR, Martin SW, Thorsen J, Ingram DG.The outbreaks of upper respiratory tract infections in horses at Standardbred racetracks were investigated over a three year period. The most serious epidemics of respiratory disease occurred in the winter and spring seasons. Both influenza viruses and equine herpesvirus 1 were shown to be present in the horse population. The herpesvirus was associated with respiratory disease particularly in the winter but the equine influenza viruses apparently were responsible for the major epidemics of respiratory disease at these tracks. Younger horses, two or three years of age, were particularly suscept...
[Architectonics of the blood vessels in the wall of the allantoamnion of the mare].
Veterinarno-meditsinski nauki    January 1, 1979   Volume 16, Issue 8 23-28
Gudev Kh, Kovachev G.Alantoamnion vascularization was studied on clarified preparations from three mares in advanced pregnancy. Two large blood vessels (artery and vein) beginning from the umbilical vessels were found in the alantoamnion wall. Numerous anastomoses were observed at the passage between the arterial and the vein section. The large arteries had a thick, jely-like vascular wall and snake-like folded lumen. In separate sections of the alantoamnion wall a well developed capillary net was observed consisting of individual particles, polygonal in shape. Vast avascular zones surrounded by numerous vascular ...
Ultrastructure of rat pinealocytes in vitro: influence of gonadotropic hormones and LH-RH.
Cell and tissue research    December 29, 1978   Volume 195, Issue 3 547-556 doi: 10.1007/BF00233896
Karasek M, Marek K, Kunert-Radek J.The influence of gonadotropic hormones on the ultrastructure of rat pinealocytesin short-term organ culture was studied. Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), as well as pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG), caused a marked activation of pinealocytes. An hypothesis is discussed implying the presence of a feedback mechanism between the pineal organ and the hypothalamo-hypophysial system.

Tendon and ligament from the horse: an ultrastructural study of collagen fibrils and elastic fibres as a function of age.
Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B, Biological sciences    December 18, 1978   Volume 203, Issue 1152 293-303 doi: 10.1098/rspb.1978.0106
Parry DA, Craig AS, Barnes GR.A study has been made of the ultrastructural organization of the collagen fibrils and elastic fibres in tendons and ligaments from horses of ages ranging from 2 months premature to 19 years. Diameter distributions of the collagen fibrils in the common digital extensor tendon, the superficial flexor tendon and the suspensory ligament are unimodal in the foetal tissue and at birth, and at these stages of development the three collagenous tissues are virtually indistinguishable. However, at maturity, the ligament and flexor tendon have bimodal distributions similar to that found for rat-tail tend...

A rapid and simple method for the isolation of pure eosinophilic leukocytes from horse blood.
Experientia    December 15, 1978   Volume 34, Issue 12 1654-1656 doi: 10.1007/BF02034734
Jรถrg A, Portmann P, Fellay G, Dreyer JL, Meyer J.An improved and short method is described for the isolation of intact eosinophilic leukocytes from horse blood with high yield (1--1.5 g/20 l). Viability and purity of the preparations were verified by light and electron microscopy and by the trypan blue exclusion test. Isolated eosinophils were 98--100% pure, intact and viable, and they could be shown to phagocytise immune-complexes.
