Topic:Horse Breeds

Horse breeds represent the diverse genetic and phenotypic variations found within the species Equus ferus caballus. These breeds are categorized based on characteristics such as size, conformation, coat color, and temperament, which have been selectively bred over centuries to fulfill specific roles and functions. Common classifications of horse breeds include light horses, draft horses, and ponies, each serving different purposes ranging from riding and racing to work and companionship. This page aggregates peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the genetics, history, and functional attributes of various horse breeds, as well as their impact on equine management and breeding practices.

Gene    August 23, 2007   Volume 404, Issue 1-2 1-9 doi: 10.1016/j.gene.2007.07.034
Herszberg B, Mata X, Giulotto E, Decaunes P, Piras FM, Chowdhary BP, Chaffaux S, Guérin G.Glycogen debranching enzyme (AGL) is a multifunctional enzyme acting in the glycogen degradation pathway. In humans, the AGL activity deficiency causes a type III glycogen storage disease (Cori-Forbes disease). One particularity of AGL gene expression lies in the multiple alternative splicing in its 5' region. The AGL gene was localized on ECA5q14-q15. The sequence of the equine cDNA was determined to be 7.5 kb in length with an open reading frame of 4602 bp. The gene is 69 kb long and contains 35 exons. The equine AGL gene has an ubiquitous expression and presents five tissue-dependent cDNA v...

Journal of animal breeding and genetics = Zeitschrift fur Tierzuchtung und Zuchtungsbiologie    July 27, 2007   Volume 124, Issue 4 185-191 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0388.2007.00659.x
Oki H, Kusunose R, Nakaoka H, Nishiura A, Miyake T, Sasaki Y.Genetic variation of the behaviour of racehorses is one of the major concerns for racehorse breeders. In this study, the heritabilities of behavioural responses to the inspections of conjunctiva, auscultation and blood sampling and the genetic correlations among them were estimated in the Thoroughbred racehorse. The estimation was done with Bayesian analysis with Gibbs sampling based on the univariate or bivariate threshold animal models. The behavioural responses were scored with four categories at the first entrance quarantine in Miho Training Center of Japan Racing Association from 1993 to ...
Rapidly cooled horse spermatozoa: loss of viability is due to osmotic imbalance during thawing, not intracellular ice formation.
Theriogenology    July 23, 2007   Volume 68, Issue 5 804-812 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2007.06.009
Morris GJ, Faszer K, Green JE, Draper D, Grout BW, Fonseca F.The cellular damage that spermatozoa encounter at rapid rates of cooling has often been attributed to the formation of intracellular ice. However, no direct evidence of intracellular ice has been presented. An alternative mechanism has been proposed by Morris (2006) that cell damage is a result of an osmotic imbalance encountered during thawing. This paper examines whether intracellular ice forms during rapid cooling or if an alternative mechanism is present. Horse spermatozoa were cooled at a range of cooling rates from 0.3 to 3,000 degrees C/min in the presence of a cryoprotectant. The ultra...
Changes in major proteins in the embryonic capsule during immobilization (fixation) of the conceptus in the third week of pregnancy in the mare.
Reproduction (Cambridge, England)    July 21, 2007   Volume 134, Issue 1 161-170 doi: 10.1530/REP-06-0241
Quinn BA, Hayes MA, Waelchli RO, Kennedy MW, Betteridge KJ.During the third week of pregnancy, the equine conceptus is enclosed within a capsule, the glycan composition of which changes at around day 16 (ovulation = day 0) when the conceptus becomes immobilized (fixed) in the uterine lumen. Our objective was to characterize the process of fixation by identifying changes in major capsule-associated proteins. Individual equine conceptuses (n = 55) were collected transcervically by uterine lavage between days 13.5 and 26.5. Major proteins extracted from capsules were compared with those in fluids from the uterus and yolk sac by SDS-PAGE. Until day 14, a ...

Acta veterinaria Scandinavica    July 17, 2007   Volume 49, Issue 1 19 doi: 10.1186/1751-0147-49-19
Strand E, Braathen LC, Hellsten MC, Huse-Olsen L, Bjornsdottir S.The Icelandic horse is a pristine breed of horse which has a pure gene pool established more than a thousand years ago, and is approximately the same size as living and extinct wild breeds of horses. This study was performed to compare the length of the skeletal growth period of the "primitive" Icelandic horse relative to that reported for large horse breeds developed over the recent centuries. This information would provide practical guidance to owners and veterinarians as to when the skeleton is mature enough to commence training, and would be potentially interesting to those scientists inve...

Animal reproduction science    June 13, 2007   Volume 103, Issue 3-4 374-378 doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2007.06.001
Hidalgo M, Rodríguez I, Dorado J, Soler C.This work used semen samples collected from 12 stallions and assessed for sperm morphometry by the Sperm Class Analyzer (SCA) computer-assisted system. A discriminant analysis was performed on the morphometric data from that sperm to obtain a classification matrix for sperm head shape. Thereafter, we defined six types of sperm head shape. Classification of sperm head by this method obtained a globally correct assignment of 90.1%. Moreover, significant differences (p<0.05) were found between animals for all the sperm head morphometric parameters assessed.

The Veterinary record    May 22, 2007   Volume 160, Issue 20 691-694 doi: 10.1136/vr.160.20.691
Lamas LP, Giovagnoli G, Heath MF, Jeffcott LB.Height is the only factor used to differentiate horses and ponies for competitive purposes; any horse without shoes that is less than 148 cm at the highest point of the withers can be classified as a pony. However, variations in height associated with anatomical and other factors can occur. In this study the accuracy of the most commonly used measuring procedure and seven independent factors that might affect apparent height were evaluated in skeletally mature horses that were less than 155 cm in height. The results indicated that there was an improvement of 57 per cent in the accuracy of meas...

A polymorphism within the equine CRISP3 gene is associated with stallion fertility in Hanoverian warmblood horses.
Animal genetics    April 13, 2007   Volume 38, Issue 3 259-264 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2052.2007.01594.x
Hamann H, Jude R, Sieme H, Mertens U, Töpfer-Petersen E, Distl O, Leeb T.Fertility of stallions is of high economic importance, especially for large breeding organisations and studs. Breeding schemes with respect to fertility traits and selection of stallions at an early stage may be improved by including molecular genetic markers associated with traits. The genes coding for equine cysteine-rich secretory proteins (CRISPs) are promising candidate genes because previous studies have shown that CRISPs play a role in the fertilising ability of male animals. We have previously characterised the three equine CRISP genes and identified a non-synonymous polymorphism in th...
