Equine hoof function investigated by pressure transducers inside the hoof and accelerometers mounted on the first phalanx. The dampening of hoof impact was investigated by measuring the accelerations transmitted through structures of the hoof in horses trotting freely on an asphalt tarmac. The hoof dampened the vibrations transmitted to the first phalanx. It has been hypothesised that horses have a preference for facing backward in a trailer during road transport in order to minimise shifts of body weight due to accelerations and decelerations. Differential artificial ventilation in anesthetized horses positioned in lateral recumbency. Effects of differential ventilation on gas exchange were studied in 7 isoflurane-anesthetized, laterally recumbent horses, and were compared with effects of conventional ventilation, using similar minute volume. Gait and respiration in standardbred horses when pacing and galloping. The relationship between gait and the respiratory response to exercise was examined in five standardbred racehorses which exercised on a treadmill at a pace and a gallop. After an initial warm-up, respiratory rate and stride frequency were measured after one and two minutes of treadmill exercise at 80 per cent of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), after one minute at 100 per cent VO2max and after two minutes at 100 per cent VO2max (galloping horses only). Quantitation of alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor in the pulmonary epithelial lining fluid of horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The concentration of alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor (API) was measured in the pulmonary epithelial lining fluid (PELF) of horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) while they had clinical signs and while they had none. The concentrations of total protein, albumin and API were significantly higher in the PELF of animals with clinical signs of COPD. The correlation between albumin and API in the PELF suggested that most of the API was derived from the serum.
Review of 40 cases of lung abscesses in foals and adult horses. A retrospective study of 40 horses with primary lung abscesses without pleuropneumonia showed that lung abscesses occurred predominantly in young horses, usually in foals aged < or = 6 months. Hyperfibrinogenaemia was present in all but 2 horses, and other common clinical and haematological findings were hyperthermia, tachycardia, polypnoea, and neutrophilic leucocytosis. Monoclonal antibodies to equine arteritis virus proteins identify the GL protein as a target for virus neutralization. Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) to equine arteritis virus (EAV) proteins were produced and characterized. The protein specificities of eight MAbs were determined definitively by immunoprecipitation of EAV proteins expressed from vaccinia virus recombinants (VVRs). Evaluation of the thoraco-laryngeal reflex (‘slap test’) as an aid to the diagnosis of cervical spinal cord and brainstem disease in horses. A study was conducted over a 12 month period to assess the specificity and sensitivity of the 'slap test', using endoscopic evaluation, in the detection of cervical spinal cord and caudal brainstem lesions in horses. Ataxia due to a vertebral haemangiosarcoma in a horse. A haemangiosarcoma in a horse resulted in ataxia affecting all four legs, a low head carriage and a reluctance to flex the neck. Ancillary diagnostic procedures included the analysis of cerebrospinal fluid, standing lateral cervical radiographs and a myelogram. Post mortem a tumour was found which involved the body of the second cervical vertebra and the associated hypaxial muscles, with secondary intravertebral extradural infiltration and focal compressive myelopathy. A histological examination showed that the tumour was a haemangiosarcoma.
Potency of partially purified malleo-proteins for mallein test in the diagnosis of glanders in equines. Malleo-proteins from synthetic broth mallein of six strains of Pseudomonas mallei were separated by trichloroacetic acid precipitation, ammonium sulfate precipitation and Ultrogel AcA 34 gel filtration chromatography. Abdominal radiography for diagnosis of enterolithiasis in horses: 141 cases (1990-1992). Medical records of 245 horses that had been evaluated by use of abdominal radiography between January 1990 and December 1992 were reviewed. One hundred forty-one horses subsequently had a postmortem examination or surgical exploration performed for definitive lesion diagnosis. Genetic analysis of equine rotavirus by RNA-RNA hybridization. Serotype G3 equine rotaviruses isolated in Japan made up a common genogroup and were classified into two different genotypes. The genomes of serotype G3 equine rotaviruses with an identical electropherotype (isolated from 1982 to 1989) were very closely related to each other regardless of the year in which they were isolated. Temperature and pH effects on the oxygen equilibrium curve of the thoroughbred horse. A new oxygen equilibrium curve is defined for the Thoroughbred horse under standard conditions of 37 degrees C, pH = 7.4 and PCO2 = 5.33 kPa. African horsesickness: pathogenesis and immunity. African horsesickness (AHS) is a serious, non-contagious disease of horses and other solipeds caused by an arthropod-borne orbivirus of the family Reoviridae. The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of procainamide in horses after intravenous administration. Six horses were administered either 15 or 20 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) procainamide (PA) as an intravenous (i.v.) dose over 10 min. The plasma concentrations of PA and N-acetylprocainamide (NAPA) as well as the pharmacodynamic effect (prolongation of the QT interval) were monitored. The PA plasma concentrations could be described by a one-compartment model with a t1/2 of 3.49 +/- 0.61 h. The total body clearance of PA was 0.395 +/- 0.090 l/hr/kg and the volume of distribution was 1.93 +/- 0.27 l/kg. Application of PCR to a clinical and environmental investigation of a case of equine botulism. PCR for the detection of botulinum neurotoxin gene types A to E was used in the investigation of a case of equine botulism. Samples from a foal diagnosed with toxicoinfectious botulism in 1985 were reanalyzed by PCR and the mouse bioassay in conjunction with an environmental survey.
