Topic:Lipids

Lipids in horses are a diverse group of organic compounds that include fats, oils, waxes, and certain vitamins. These molecules are essential components of cell membranes and serve as a major energy source for equine metabolism. In horses, lipids are involved in various physiological processes, including energy storage, insulation, and the synthesis of hormones. The study of lipids encompasses their biochemical properties, metabolic pathways, and their impact on equine health and performance. Research in this area investigates the role of dietary lipids, the effects of lipid metabolism on equine diseases, and the implications of lipid profiles in athletic horses. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the biochemical roles, metabolic regulation, and health implications of lipids in horses.

Theriogenology    November 26, 2017   Volume 108 161-166 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2017.11.025
Cabrera T, Ramires-Neto C, Belaz KRA, Freitas-Dell'aqua CP, Zampieri D, Tata A, Eberlin MN, Alvarenga MA, Souza FF.The membrane of spermatozoa, which contributes to cellular cryoresistance, contains numerous lipids with a composition that directly affects membrane fluidity and the fertilization process. In light of variations in the degree of sensitivity in equine seminal freezing, this study aimed to correlate equine semen lipids with post-thawing characteristics of spermatozoa. We used ejaculates from 34 stallions, which were evaluated (total motility ≥ 60%), frozen and thawed and reevaluated for motility of spermatozoa, membrane integrity and lipid peroxidation. Lipid extraction of the fresh semen s...
Determination of lipid profiles in serum of obese ponies before and after weight reduction by using multi-one-dimensional thin-layer chromatography.
Research in veterinary science    November 21, 2017   Volume 117 111-117 doi: 10.1016/j.rvsc.2017.11.013
Auyyuenyong R, Henze A, Ungru J, Schweigert FJ, Raila J, Vervuert I.Obesity is a key component of equine metabolic syndrome, which is highly associated with laminitis. Feed restriction and/or exercise are known to alleviate the detrimental effects of insulin resistance in obese ponies. However, little is known about changes in the serum lipid patterns due to weight reduction and its association with disease outcomes. Therefore, the lipid patterns in the serum of 14 mature ponies before and after a 14-week body weight reduction program (BWRP) were investigated by multi-one-dimensional thin-layer chromatography (MOD-TLC). Additionally, sensitivity to insulin (SI...

Theriogenology    November 10, 2017   Volume 107 149-153 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2017.11.004
Aurich C, Ortega Ferrusola C, Peña Vega FJ, Schrammel N, Morcuende D, Aurich J.Spermatozoa contain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Cryopreservation damages sperm membranes and they become less functional after thawing. We analysed the lipid composition of spermatozoa from Shetland stallions (n = 15) collected monthly from January to June and hypothesized that sperm lipid patterns change with season. In addition, one ejaculate per month was submitted to cryopreservation. Content of saturated palmytic and stearic acid decreased from January to March (p < 0.001) while content of the PUFA docosapentaenoic (p < 0.001) and arachidonic acid (p < 0.05) and t...

Theriogenology    September 20, 2017   Volume 105 120-125 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2017.09.012
Wood PL, Ball BA, Scoggin K, Troedsson MH, Squires EL.Amniotic fluid is essential for the growth and maturation of the fetus prior to parturition. While our knowledge of human amniotic fluid is extensive, current data for equine amniotic fluid is limited. We therefore undertook a detailed lipidomics analysis of equine amniotic fluid. Using a non-targeted high-resolution mass spectrometric lipidomics analysis of equine amniotic fluid, we were able to characterize a diverse array of individual lipids. This non-biased analytical approach detected, for the first time, the presence of (O-acyl)-ω-hydroxy-fatty acids (OAHFA) with up to 52 carbon chain ...
Effect of feed deprivation on selected parameters of lipid mobilisation and hepatic function in healthy Akhal Teke horses.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 2017   Volume 50, Issue 1 98-103 doi: 10.1111/evj.12730
Tóth B, Auth A, Rompos L, Bakos Z.Gastrointestinal and other systemic diseases of Equidae are often characterised by partial or complete inappetence. The catabolic processes may lead to lipid mobilisation and other metabolic disturbances. Evidence from earlier studies has revealed that during feed deprivation/inappetence, the conjugation of bilirubin is reduced causing a substantial rise of the total bilirubin and its unconjugated fraction. Objective: We hypothesised that during feed deprivation, the serum concentration of free fatty acids (FFA), triglycerides (TG), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), total bilirubin (tBIL), total bile...

Talanta    May 19, 2017   Volume 172 206-214 doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2017.05.042
Guan M, Dai D, Li L, Wei J, Yang H, Li S, Zhang Y, Lin Y, Xiong S, Zhao Z.High levels of triacylglycerols (TGs) have been linked to cardiovascular disease and liver diseases. Comprehensively analyzing TGs is helpful to understand the TGs functions in these diseases. However, due to the existence of a large number of isomers TGs and the lack of commercial standards, precise analysis of individual triacylglycerol (TG) with specific fatty acid chain composition is full of challenge. In this work, ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) coupled with electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry (MS) were employed for comprehensive qualification and quantificati...

Intense Exercise and Aerobic Conditioning Associated with Chromium or L-Carnitine Supplementation Modified the Fecal Microbiota of Fillies.
PloS one    December 9, 2016   Volume 11, Issue 12 e0167108 doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0167108
Almeida ML, Feringer WH, Carvalho JR, Rodrigues IM, Jordão LR, Fonseca MG, Carneiro de Rezende AS, de Queiroz Neto A, Weese JS, Costa MC, Lemos EG....Recent studies performed in humans and rats have reported that exercise can alter the intestinal microbiota. Athletic horses perform intense exercise regularly, but studies characterizing horse microbiome during aerobic conditioning programs are still limited. Evidence has indicated that this microbial community is involved in the metabolic homeostasis of the host. Research on ergogenic substances using new sequencing technologies have been limited to the intestinal microbiota and there is a considerable demand for scientific studies that verify the effectiveness of these supplements in horses...
The effect of oxidative stress during exercise in the horse.
Journal of animal science    November 30, 2016   Volume 94, Issue 10 4067-4075 doi: 10.2527/jas.2015-9988
Williams CA.Oxidative stress is an imbalance of the oxidant-to-antioxidant ratio in the body. Increases in oxidative stress and changes in antioxidant status have been shown during endurance and intense exercise and eventing competition in horses. Antioxidants include vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and proteins that must be synthesized in the body or obtained from the diet. Therefore, exercise level and diet are both factors that play a role in influencing the oxidative stress and antioxidant status of the equine athlete. Along with exercise intensity and duration, diet, age, and training program can also a...

Veterinary journal (London, England : 1997)    November 22, 2016   Volume 219 6-11 doi: 10.1016/j.tvjl.2016.11.013
Ziegler A, Gerber V, Marti E.Insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH) is an equine allergic dermatitis to Culicoides spp. antigens. Attempts at using allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) as a treatment for IBH have so far proven unsuccessful. Toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists can promote a shift in the immune response from the allergy-promoting T helper cell 2 (Th2) response towards a Th1 and/or regulatory response. The aim of this study was to evaluate two immunomodulatory TLR agonists in vitro as potential vaccine adjuvants for a more efficacious AIT in IBH. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from healthy and IBH-aff...

BMC veterinary research    November 4, 2016   Volume 12, Issue 1 245 doi: 10.1186/s12917-016-0874-6
Chanda M, Srikuea R, Cherdchutam W, Chairoungdua A, Piyachaturawat P.The match play patterns in equestrian polo are unique and require specific training programs to ensure sport performance. The effect of commonly used exercise training regimens on the adaptation of skeletal muscle is unclear. The present study investigated the modulating effects of the classic training regimen, comprised of aerobic exercise training with increasing exercise intensities and varying duration combined with match play, on the properties of muscle in polo ponies. Nine healthy adult female polo ponies were subjected to four consecutive subsets of 1 year classic training regimen incl...
Transcriptome profiling of equine vitamin E deficient neuroaxonal dystrophy identifies upregulation of liver X receptor target genes.
Free radical biology & medicine    October 15, 2016   Volume 101 261-271 doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2016.10.009
Finno CJ, Bordbari MH, Valberg SJ, Lee D, Herron J, Hines K, Monsour T, Scott E, Bannasch DL, Mickelson J, Xu L.Specific spontaneous heritable neurodegenerative diseases have been associated with lower serum and cerebrospinal fluid α-tocopherol (α-TOH) concentrations. Equine neuroaxonal dystrophy (eNAD) has similar histologic lesions to human ataxia with vitamin E deficiency caused by mutations in the α-TOH transfer protein gene (TTPA). Mutations in TTPA are not present with eNAD and the molecular basis remains unknown. Given the neuropathologic phenotypic similarity of the conditions, we assessed the molecular basis of eNAD by global transcriptome sequencing of the cervical spinal cord. Differential...
Characterisation of equine satellite cell transcriptomic profile response to β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB).
The British journal of nutrition    October 3, 2016   Volume 116, Issue 8 1315-1325 doi: 10.1017/S000711451600324X
Szcześniak KA, Ciecierska A, Ostaszewski P, Sadkowski T.β-Hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) is a popular ergogenic aid used by human athletes and as a supplement to sport horses, because of its ability to aid muscle recovery, improve performance and body composition. Recent findings suggest that HMB may stimulate satellite cells and affect expressions of genes regulating skeletal muscle cell growth. Despite the scientific data showing benefits of HMB supplementation in horses, no previous study has explained the mechanism of action of HMB in this species. The aim of this study was to reveal the molecular background of HMB action on equine skeletal m...
Differential expression of skeletal muscle genes following administration of clenbuterol to exercised horses.
BMC genomics    August 9, 2016   Volume 17 596 doi: 10.1186/s12864-016-2945-2
Knych HK, Harrison LM, Steinmetz SJ, Chouicha N, Kass PH.Clenbuterol, a beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist, is used therapeutically to treat respiratory conditions in the horse. However, by virtue of its mechanism of action it has been suggested that clenbuterol may also have repartitioning affects in horses and as such the potential to affect performance. Clenbuterol decreases the percent fat and increases fat-free mass following high dose administration in combination with intense exercise in horses. In the current study, microarray analysis and real-time PCR were used to study the temporal effects of low and high dose chronic clenbuterol administr...

Theriogenology    April 13, 2016   Volume 86, Issue 5 1156-1164 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2016.04.005
Arfuso F, Giannetto C, Rizzo M, Fazio F, Giudice E, Piccione G.The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of serum mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) and leptin levels as well as of lipid and lipoprotein profiles in mares during the peripartum period. Ten pregnant mares (group A) were monitored from 15 ± 3 days of pregnancy until 15 days after foaling, and 10 nonpregnant nonlactating mares constituted the control (group B). In group A, blood sampling was performed on Days 15 ± 3 and 7 ± 3 before foaling, on the day of foaling, and on Days 7 and 15 after foaling. In group B, blood sampling was performed on the same days as in gr...
HSP-1/2, a major horse seminal plasma protein, acts as a chaperone against oxidative stress.
Biochemical and biophysical research communications    April 5, 2016   Volume 473, Issue 4 1058-1063 doi: 10.1016/j.bbrc.2016.04.015
Kumar CS, Swamy MJ.The major protein of equine seminal plasma, HSP-1/2 exhibits chaperone-like activity and protects a variety of target proteins against thermal and chemical stress conditions. Here, we show that HSP-1/2 is able to protect enzymes such as alcohol dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase against H2O2 induced stress, clearly demonstrating that HSP-1/2 acts as a chaperone against oxidative stress. Further, the present studies show that HSP-1/2 also inhibits lipid (linoleic acid) peroxidation by hydroxyl radicals in vitro. These results are of great significance considering that so far l...
Nutritional management of the foal with diarrhoea.
Equine veterinary education    March 30, 2016   Volume 30, Issue 2 100-105 doi: 10.1111/eve.12564
Barr B.Diarrhoea is a common problem in the neonatal and suckling foal. In certain circumstances supplemental nutrition is necessary depending on the age of foal, severity of diarrhoea and presence of other systemic manifestations. Nutritional supplementation can be provided either enterally or parenterally. Enteral nutrition is superior to parenteral nutrition because it is the most natural and physiologically sound means to provide nutritional support. Parenteral nutrition may be warranted if the foal is unable to receive or tolerate enteral nutrition. Dextrose alone or with amino acids and lipids ...
Phospholipid analysis in sera of horses with allergic dermatitis and in matched healthy controls.
Lipids in health and disease    March 2, 2016   Volume 15 45 doi: 10.1186/s12944-016-0209-4
Hallamaa R, Batchu K.Lipids have become an important target for searching new biomarkers typical of different autoimmune and allergic diseases. The most common allergic dermatitis of the horse is related to stings of insects and is known as insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH) or summer eczema, referring to its recurrence during the summer months. This intense pruritus has certain similarities with atopic dermatitis of humans. The treatment of IBH is difficult and therefore new strategies for therapy are needed. Autoserum therapy based on the use of serum phospholipids has recently been introduced for horses. So far...

Biology of reproduction    December 2, 2015   Volume 94, Issue 1 15 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod.115.130187
Sessions-Bresnahan DR, Schauer KL, Heuberger AL, Carnevale EM.Obesity is associated with disrupted reproductive cycles in mares, but the impact of obesity on follicles and oocytes has received minimal attention. We investigated the impact of obesity on 1) expression of selected genes in follicle cells for carbohydrate metabolism, inflammatory cytokines, lipid homeostasis, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and mitochondrial function; 2) follicular fluid content of metabolic hormones and metabolites; and 3) lipid fingerprint of oocytes. Mares (9-13 yr) were classified as control (n = 8, normal weight, body condition score [BCS] 5.1, 10.4% body fat) or obese (n...
Coenzyme Q10 and α-Tocopherol Prevent the Lipid Peroxidation of Cooled Equine Semen.
Reproduction in domestic animals = Zuchthygiene    October 22, 2015   Volume 50, Issue 6 1003-1010 doi: 10.1111/rda.12627
Nogueira BG, Sampaio BF, Souza MI, Costa E Silva EV, Zúccari CE.Biotechnology applied for equine semen increases the levels of reactive oxygen species and reduces the natural antioxidant defence, by both dilution and removal of seminal plasma. Therefore, the aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of adding coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and α-tocopherol (α-TOH) to the cooling extender, singly or in combination, on sperm parameters, and their effectiveness in preventing lipid peroxidation (LPO) of equine semen during cooling at 5°C for 72 h. Ten adult stallions of proven fertility were used, using two ejaculates each, subjecting them to the treatments with...
L-carnitine and pyruvate are prosurvival factors during the storage of stallion spermatozoa at room temperature.
Biology of reproduction    August 26, 2015   Volume 93, Issue 4 104 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod.115.131326
Gibb Z, Lambourne SR, Quadrelli J, Smith ND, Aitken RJ.The spermatozoa of many stallions do not tolerate being cooled, restricting the commercial viability of these animals and necessitating the development of a chemically defined room temperature (RT) storage medium. This study examined the impact of two major modulators of oxidative phosphorylation, pyruvate (Pyr) and L-carnitine (L-C), on the storage of stallion spermatozoa at RT. Optimal concentrations of Pyr (10 mM) and L-C (50 mM) were first identified and these concentrations were then used to investigate the effects of these compounds on sperm functionality and oxidative stress at RT. Mito...
Energetics of endurance exercise in young horses determined by nuclear magnetic resonance metabolomics.
Frontiers in physiology    July 15, 2015   Volume 6 198 doi: 10.3389/fphys.2015.00198
Luck MM, Le Moyec L, Barrey E, Triba MN, Bouchemal N, Savarin P, Robert C.Long-term endurance exercise severely affects metabolism in both human and animal athletes resulting in serious risk of metabolic disorders during or after competition. Young horses (up to 6 years old) can compete in races up to 90 km despite limited scientific knowledge of energetic metabolism responses to long distance exercise in these animals. The hypothesis of this study was that there would be a strong effect of endurance exercise on the metabolomic profiles of young horses and that the energetic metabolism response in young horses would be different from that of more experienced horses....
