Horses with obstruction of the duodenum had the most violent physical signs and the shortest survival time. Clinical and clinicopathologic findings as well as information on therapeutic attempts in two foals are described. Clinicopathologic abnormalities common to both cases included leukopenia, hyperfibrinogenemia, metabolic acidosis, and hypoglycemia. Treatment was unsuccessful in both cases.

One, an 11-year-old Quarter Horse mare, had been depressed and ataxic for 2 days. The other, a 2-year-old Quarter Horse colt, had a 6-week history of depression, anorexia, and weight loss. Both horses responded to fluid and electrolyte therapy, but required daily oral administration of sodium bicarbonate for maintenance. In each case, the diagnosis was renal tubular acidosis.

Trotter GW, Miller D, Parks A, Arden W.Persistent, severe metabolic acidosis complicated the operative and postoperative period in a 4-year-old mare with colic. On the basis of clinical and laboratory findings, a renal tubular disorder was diagnosed. Renal tubular acidosis is rare in horses. In the only report found on the subject, type I renal tubular acidosis was described in 2 horses. Bicarbonate titration studies in our case helped document type II renal tubular acidosis in this mare.

Blood biochemistry showed that concentrations of creatinine (136 mumol.L-1) and urea nitrogen (6.1 mmol.L-1) in plasma were within their normal limits.
