Chemical immobilization and blood analysis of feral horses (Equus caballus). Combinations of etorphine hydrochloride and xylazine hydrochloride in different dosages were tested for their efficacy as immobilizing agents on 16 recently captured feral mares in corrals. Pharmacokinetics of gentamicin at steady-state in ponies: serum, urine, and endometrial concentrations. Uraemia in the mare: effects of seasonal variations, of energy level of the diet and individual differences. Uraemia variations in the heavy breed mare were studied in different situations. A study with 35 mares during an entire grazing season was conducted. The mean uraemia varied between 48.5 and 67.5 mg/100 ml plasma, with season and type of grass. The highest values were found with first-cycle pasture grass. Uraemia was lower with winter diets: 28.6 to 36.0 mg/100 ml. The influence of dietary fiber digestibility on the nitrogen requirements of mature horses. Acute experimentally induced aflatoxicosis in the weanling pony. Nineteen weanling ponies and 1 adult pony were given a single oral dose of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Effects of large doses of phenylbutazone administration to horses. The effects of large doses of phenylbutazone were evaluated in clinically normal horses. The drug was given to 4 groups of 2 horses each at the rate of 30 mg/kg of body weight, orally, or 30, 15, or 8 mg/kg IV daily for up to 2 weeks. All horses became anorectic and depressed after 2 to 4 phenylbutazone treatments, and the horses given 15 or 30 mg/kg died on or between days 4 and 7 of treatment. Osmolality is an indication of the osmotic pressure of plasma and depends on the amount of solute and solvent (water) present. The mean (+sd) plasma osmolality of 100 clinically normal animals was 282 (+6) mOsm/kg using lithium heparin as anticoagulant. Gentamicin toxic nephropathy in horses with disseminated bacterial infection. Three clinical cases of toxic nephropathy in young horses were ascribed to gentamicin toxicity. Criteria for defining gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicosis were a serum urea nitrogen value greater than the pretreatment value or cylindruria, hematuria, and proteinuria in the absence of pyuria and bacteriuria. Recommended doses of gentamicin had been given in all cases. The nephropathy was reversible in 1 case in which the toxicosis was detected early and was treated by volume diuresis and drug withdrawal.
Milk production of quarter horse mares during 150 days of lactation. Milk production was measured in fourteen Quarter Horse mares at seven stages of a 150-d lactation period. Mares were divided into two groups of seven and fed diets containing either soybean meal or soybean meal and urea as nitrogen supplements. Clinicopathological aspects of imidocarb dipropionate toxicity in horses. Six groups of four adult horses were twice injected intramuscularly at a 24 hour interval with 0, 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32 mg/kg of imidocarb dipropionate (IMDP) and monitored for 21 days. Metabolic abnormalities associated with rupture of the urinary bladder in neonatal foals. Rupture of the urinary bladder was diagnosed in 4 neonatal male foals. Marked hyponatremia, hypochloremia, and hyperkalemia developed in all 4 cases, and the electrolyte abnormalities were considered to be of potential diagnostic value. Blood urea nitrogen concentration was normal or only slightly higher than normal in 3 of 4 cases and therefore was not a reliable diagnostic test.
