Pathogenesis of Babesia caballi infection in experimental horses. The present study was designed to investigate the role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of Babesia caballi in experimentally infected horses. Persistent right aortic arch in a yearling horse. A comparison between clenbuterol, salbutamol and terbutaline in relation to receptor binding and in vitro relaxation of equine tracheal muscle. Beta2-adrenoceptor agonists are used as bronchodilators in both humans and horses. Of these drugs, clenbuterol is the one most frequently used when treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the horse, while salbutamol and terbutaline are used in the treatment of human asthma. Enterotoxigenic Clostridium perfringens type A necrotic enteritis in a foal. A Thoroughbred-Quarter Horse crossbred foal developed hemorrhagic enteritis and died < 48 hours after birth. Gross and histologic findings were suggestive of Clostridium perfringens type C infection, and large numbers of C perfringens were isolated from intestinal contents. However, genotyping of isolates indicated that they were enterotoxigenic C perfringens type A, and isolates were found to produce C perfringens enterotoxin in vitro. This case suggests that enterotoxigenic C perfringens type A may cause enteric disease in horses.

Accuracy of different methods of estimating the weight of horses. Six hundred horses of different ages, heights and breeds were weighed on a weighbridge and had their weights estimated by two weigh tapes, 1 and 2, by a formula, and by a visual estimate. For the population as a whole, the most accurate method was the formula (mean [sd] 98.6 [10.6] per cent) closely followed by weigh tape 2 (98.1 [8.1] per cent).
