General pharmacology    January 1, 1988   Volume 19, Issue 5 683-688 doi: 10.1016/0306-3623(88)90129-2
Yang JM, Woods WE, Weckman TJ, Wood TW, Chang SL, Blake JW, Tobin T.1. Drug administration studies using diisopropylamine dichloroacetate (DADA) and diisopropylamine (DIPA) were conducted in Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses to assess physiological effects and develop detection methods. 2. Four horses received 0.08 mg DADA/kg body wt and showed no changes in heart and respiratory rates or body temperature as measured over a 1-hr period after administration. A transient diuretic effect was found to occur in 2 mares dosed with 0.80 mg DADA/kg body wt. 3. A qualitative detection method using thin-layer chromatography was developed to detect DIPA, the major met...
Antigenic variation of equine infectious anemia virus as detected by virus neutralization. Brief report.
Archives of virology    January 1, 1988   Volume 98, Issue 1-2 91-97 doi: 10.1007/BF01321009
Kono Y.The antigenic structure of 16 viruses isolated from four horses which were inoculated with a clone of equine infectious anemia (EIA) virus was compared by the neutralization test. The antigenic structure of viruses isolated after development of neutralizing antibody differed from virus to virus. Back mutation of the antigenic structure was also demonstrated by serial passage of the virus in horses. These results suggest that EIA virus is subject to multidirectional antigenic variation. The possibility that the variants originated in the heterologous virus population in the inoculum seems to be...
In vitro and in vivo binding of phenylbutazone and related drugs to equine feeds and digesta.
Research in veterinary science    January 1, 1988   Volume 44, Issue 1 50-56
Lees P, Taylor JB, Higgins AJ, Sedgwick AD.In vitro and in vivo studies of phenylbutazone binding to equine ingesta and digesta were undertaken. In vitro binding to chopped hay and powdered pony nuts in buffer solutions at 37 degrees C was found to be time-, concentration- and pH-dependent. Percentage binding generally increased with time, decreased with concentration and varied with buffer pH in an unpredictable manner. Other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) also bound to hay, the degree of binding being less for meclofenamate and least for flunixin in comparison with phenylbutazone. Phenylbutazone became bound to digest...
Plasma heparin values and hemostasis in equids after subcutaneous administration of low-dose calcium heparin.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1988   Volume 49, Issue 1 13-18
Gerhards H, Eberhardt C.Different doses of heparin were given to equids SC to establish 0.05 to 0.20 U of heparin/ml of plasma. Plasma heparin values and antithrombin III activities were assayed, using chromogenic substrate methods. Activated partial thromboplastin and thrombin times were determined, using conventional coagulation assays. Tests were run every hour (or every 2 hours for antithrombin III) for 12 hours from 5 groups of 5 equids each after single injection of 40, 60, 80, 100, or 125 U of calcium heparin/kg of body weight and from 11 equids after injection of 150 U of calcium heparin/kg. The smaller dose ...

Journal of immunoassay    January 1, 1988   Volume 9, Issue 3-4 349-365 doi: 10.1080/01971528808053221
Jones I, Madej A.Microtitre plates were coated with antiserum against oestradiol-17 beta-6-(O-carboxymethyl)-oxime bovine serum albumin raised in sheep. The plasma samples (0.2-1.0 ml) were extracted with peroxide-free diethyl ether prepared daily by treatment with Al2O3. The enzyme conjugate was prepared by coupling oestradiol-17 beta-6-(O-carboxymethyl)-oxime to horse-radish peroxidase. The conjugate was chromatographed on a Sephadex G-25 column. The standard curve ranged from 0.37 to 18.40 fmol/well of oestradiol-17 beta. The amount of oestradiol-17 beta causing a 50% reduction of maximum binding was 4.4 fm...
Influence of an epidermal cell extract on skin healing and scar formation.
International journal of tissue reactions    January 1, 1988   Volume 10, Issue 6 381-385
Silver IA, Eisinger M.We have examined the possible regulatory role of epidermal cell extract(s) (ECE) on skin cells, namely fibroblasts and keratinocytes, both in vivo and in vitro with particular reference to modification of scar formation. In an experimental wound model in pigs, it was found that extracts of cultured human and pig keratinocytes stimulated replication of epidermal cells and their migration from wound edges and remnants of hair follicles and sebaceous glands, together with hair growth, but at the same time suppressed fibroblast proliferation in the dermis. Sections of healing skin wounds that had ...
Structural aspects of the plasminogen of various species.
Enzyme    January 1, 1988   Volume 40, Issue 2-3 63-69 doi: 10.1159/000469147

Biochimica et biophysica acta    December 18, 1987   Volume 916, Issue 3 402-410 doi: 10.1016/0167-4838(87)90186-5
Chottard G, Michelon M, Hervé M, Hervé G.Complex formation between horse heart ferricytochrome c and large three-dimensional polyanions has been investigated, in order to study the influence of surface electrostatic interactions on the structural and redox properties of cytochrome c. Cytochrome c binds the large heteropolytungstates (NaSb9W21O86)18- and (KAs4W40O140)27- with a 1/1 polyanion/cytochrome c ratio, and the smaller ion (SiW11O39)8- with a 2/1 ratio. Upon complexation, cytochrome c undergoes structural changes that are dependent on the size and charge of the polyanion, and on the pH and ionic strength of the medium. Three d...

A number of factors to which this difference could be due are briefly discussed.
Unipolar thoracic electrocardiograms in which P waves of relative uniformity occur in male horses.
American journal of veterinary research    December 1, 1987   Volume 48, Issue 12 1697-1699
Illera JC, Hamlin RL, Illera M.Bipolar and unipolar limb leads and unipolar thoracic lead ECG were obtained from 100 male crossbred horses. P-wave morphologic features were classified according to positivity negativity and monopolarity dipolarity, and the percentage of horses that had P waves of a given morphologic class in each lead was calculated. P-Wave morphologic features of 4 precordial leads were most uniform, with greater than 80% of the horses having a single configuration.
Equine ocular pathology ascribed to Onchocerca cervicalis infection: a re-examination. Moran CT, James ER.Eyes from 292 old (15-20 years) horses originating in the eastern, southeastern and midwestern United States were examined for the presence of Onchocerca cervicalis microfilariae (mf) and concurrently for anterior and posterior segment ocular pathological changes. One-hundred-fifty-three animals (52.4%) were positive for dermal mf (range 0.03-5,364/mg). Of these, 60 animals had anterior segment changes. An additional 58 animals with pathological changes had no dermal mf. Mf were recovered from the ocular tissues of 18% of animals (range 0.07-29/mg). All animals with ocular mf were positive for...

The Onderstepoort journal of veterinary research    December 1, 1987   Volume 54, Issue 4 655-656
de Waal DT, Potgieter FT.Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi larvae were fed on the ears of rabbits. Seven days after larval infestation, unfed, newly moulted nymphae were manually removed to infest a splenectomized donkey showing a patent Babesia caballi infection. Engorged nymphae were collected from the donkey and the ensuing adult ticks were placed on a susceptible horse. The horse contracted a B. caballi infection showing a prepatent period of 19 days after tick infestation. A very low parasitaemia, (highest score 2), which was patent for only 10 days, was recorded. The lowest packed cell volume recorded was 16%.

This general introduction precedes more specific and detailed articles.
Characterization of a homogeneous paraprotein from a horse with spontaneous multiple myeloma syndrome.
Veterinary immunology and immunopathology    December 1, 1987   Volume 17, Issue 1-4 69-77 doi: 10.1016/0165-2427(87)90128-0
Seide RK, Jacobs RM, Dobblestein TN, Kehoe JM.A novel myeloma paraprotein has been isolated from a horse with a lymphoid tumor. The protein was a euglobulin and consequently was readily isolated from serum in pure form and high yield by simple dilution in distilled water. The purified intact protein had a molecular weight of 150,000 and was composed of heavy and light chains, both of which had blocked amino-termini and were thus not susceptible to amino-terminal sequence analysis. The amino acid compositions of these respective chains corresponded to those of comparable chains from immunoglobulins of other species. Peptide maps of parapro...
