Renal and systemic hemodynamic responses to sustained submaximal exertion in horses. We investigated the effects of 1 h of sustained submaximal exertion on the renal and systemic hemodynamics of six horses. The horses ran on a treadmill at a speed that produced heart rates of 55-60% of each horse's maximum heart rate. Exertion produced heart rates of 121 +/- 6.6 and 126 +/- 6.1 (SE) beats/min after 15 and 60 min, respectively. Age- and position-related heterogeneity of equine tendon extracellular matrix composition. The digital flexor tendons of the neonate and adult horse have been compared with respect to variation in extracellular matrix composition along their length. Two pepsin-sensitive, acetic acid soluble proteins, molecular weight (Mr) 52 kD (np 52) and Mr 54 kD (np 54), were prominent throughout the length of neonatal tendons. Potential of alfalfa as a source of calcium for calcium deficient horses. The potential of short-cutting cycle, high temperature-dried alfalfa as a source of calcium for horses was determined by means of a 4 x 4 Latin square digestibility trial using four thoroughbred horses (mean liveweight 531 kg). The four dietary treatments were timothy hay alone, 33 per cent alfalfa and 67 per cent timothy hay, 67 per cent alfalfa and 33 per cent timothy hay, and alfalfa alone. Partial cDNA sequence for the donkey chorionic gonadotrophin-beta subunit suggests evolution from an ancestral LH-beta gene. A 246 bp cDNA clone representing the C-terminal region of the donkey (Equus asinus) chorionic gonadotrophin (CG)-beta subunit was isolated from a placental library. The transcript contained the 3' untranslated region and 42% of the CG-beta subunit coding region (amino acid residues 85-146 of the mature peptide). Characterization of horse plasma gelsolin. Gelsolin can be purified from horse blood plasma by treating the plasma sequentially with an anion-exchange medium in the presence and then the absence of free Ca2+. The purified gelsolin migrates as a 90-kilodalton protein on electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gels in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate. It has an absorption coefficient of 1.4 mL/(mg.cm) and is similar in amino acid composition to other plasma gelsolins. [Evaluation of a new medium using red-cell lysate for the isolation of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli]. A semiprepared medium containing horse globular lysate was evaluated for the isolation of Campylobacter under two incubation atmospheres (5% O2 and candle jar). Despite the fact that the horse is one of the more common domesticated animals, there are few reports dealing with the properties of its blood, and no comprehensive study has been performed on the reactivity of horse haemoglobin towards organic and inorganic ions. Large restriction fragments containing poly-TG are highly polymorphic in a variety of vertebrates. Southern blots of genomic DNA from a variety of species digested by restriction endonucleases having a four-bp specificity, were probed with a bovine genomic clone consisting of seven tandem poly-TG stretches separated by a 29bp linker sequence. Arterial blood supply to the ileocaecal junction in the horse. The arteries supplying the ileocaecal junctions of 7 horses were injected with latex via the A. ileocolica and dissected macroscopically. The same basic pattern emerged whereby a single papillary artery arising from the R. ilei mesenterialis, supplied all aspects of the ileocaecal papilla. In one instance, the papillary artery arose directly from the ileocolic artery. No collateral arterial supply to the ileocaecal junction was present in any of the specimens dissected.
Synchronization of locomotion and respiration in trotting ponies. Liquid flow and capacity of the caecum and colon of the horse. The rate of flow of fluid from the caecum and from the large colon was measured in four Shetland-type ponies fed a hay diet. In two ponies with cannulas in the caecum and at the origin of the right ventral colon, a continuous intracaecal infusion of a solution of chromium EDTA was used and samples were obtained from the cannula at the origin of the right ventral colon. Scanning electron and light microscopy of the mucosa of the equine ileocaecal junction. The ileocaecal junction mucosal surface morphology of 5 horses and 1 donkey was examined using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Equine urine pH: normal population distributions and methods of acidification. Our investigation of the urine of grazing horses at the University of Kentucky shows that the mean pH level is about 7.9, and if their diet is supplemented with grain, it is about 7.4. There appears to be no significant effect of time of day or year on urine pH levels in horses. Anatomy of the dorsoscapular ligament of horses. Thoracic limbs from 8 horses were dissected. The dorsoscapular ligament was determined to consist of a collagenous part that fused to the surface of the thoracolumbar fascia and of an elastic part that extended laterally from the collagenous part to attach to the medial surface of the scapula and interdigitate with fibers of the serratus ventralis thoracis muscle.

Radioimmunoassay for albuterol using a monoclonal antibody: application for direct quantification in horse urine. A monoclonal antibody was synthesized in mouse against the O-(3-carboxypropionyl) derivative of albuterol linked to bovine serum albumin. Isotyping of this material revealed the IgG1 class characterized by an affinity constant of 1.03 nM-1 and a density of sites of 0.55 nM. Muscle buffering capacity and dipeptide content in the thoroughbred horse, greyhound dog and man. 1. Muscle buffering capacity (beta m) and dipeptide content were measured in locomotory muscles of the Thoroughbred horse, Greyhound dog and Man. 2. Beta m and carnosine contents were highest in the horse. Anserine was only found in dog muscle. 3. The higher beta m in horse and dog muscle, compared with man, appears to be predominantly due to higher muscle contents of histidine containing dipeptides in these species.
Antimicrobial susceptibilities of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from animal and human sources in Brazil. The susceptibilities of 760 Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from animal infections (400), human infections (300) and healthy human carriers (60) to seven antibiotics were determined by an agar dilution technique. The isolates from human infections were more resistant to a wider spectrum of antibiotics than were the strains from animal infections and healthy human carriers. Amikacin and gentamicin were the most active drugs against all groups of strains.
Conformational comparison in the growth hormone family. 1. The method of Kubota et al. [Biochim. biophys. Acta 701, 242-252 (1982)] was applied to several members of the growth hormone family in order to examine their conformational homology. 2. The method neither detects differences between rat, cow, sheep, horse and alpaca hormones, nor between monkey and human hormones. 3. Lack of homology between primate and non-primate growth hormones was found in segments 42-49 and 184-191. The first fragment could be linked to species-specificity.

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis associated with domestic animals in Venezuela and Brazil. After outbreaks of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Solano State, Venezuela, 5% of the population had parasitized ulcers while after similar outbreaks in Mesquita, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, 9% had the disease. Muscle samples from the M. gluteus medius were obtained from six Quarter Horses (QH), six Thoroughbreds (TB), and five Standardbreds (SB) to determine carnosine values and fiber type percentages. 2.
