Study of agglutinins to Brucella abortus, B canis and Actinobacillus equuli in horses. Horses at a veterinary teaching hospital and a slaughterhouse were surveyed for antibodies to Brucella abortus, B canis and Actinobacillus equuli. Four of the 141 hospitalised horses and none of the 73 slaughtered horses had titres of 1:100 or greater to B abortus. Six horses of both populations reacted to the card test. One was culture positive. A card test using B canis antigen was positive in 38 per cent of the sera from hospitalised horses and all of the slaughtered horses. Mineral metabolism and immobilization osteopenia in ponies treated with 25-hydroxycholecalciferol. The left thoracic limb was immobilized in a plaster cast in 6 grade weanling ponies for 6 weeks. Two ponies were injected intramuscularly each day with 2.4 micrograms of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol [25(OH)D3] per kg bodyweight, two with 1.2 micrograms and two received no injections. Immobilization of 25(OH)D3 treatment had no significant effect on mineral metabolism. Immobilization resulted in significantly decreased weight and specific gravity of metacarpus III (MCIII). Pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties of diazepam in horses. The cardiopulmonary, behavioral, and pharmacokinetic properties of diazepam were determined in horses. Heart rate, cardiac output, mean pulmonary artery, aortic and right atrial blood pressures, respiratory rate, and arterial pH and blood gas values did not change after IV diazepam (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 mg/kg) administration. Increasing doses of diazepam resulted in signs of muscle weakness including fixed stance, muscle fasciculations of the head, neck, and thorax muscles, ataxia, and then recumbency. Changes in blood neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio related to adrenocortical function in the horse. Blood neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and plasma cortisol levels were measured before and after (1) the injection of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH1-24) in 8 Thoroughbreds and (2) exercise in 5 Thoroughbreds in training. Plasma cortisol levels were significantly (P less than 0.01) increased within 60 mins of injection of ACTH1-24 and immediately after exercise. The mean neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio altered significantly (P less than 0.01) at 240 mins after ACTH1-24 administration and at 180 mins after a training gallop. A transient lymphocytosis occurred following exercise.
Equine leucocyte antigen system. III. Non-MHC linked alloantigenic system in horses. A new, non-MHC linked alloantigenic membrane antigen on the equine lymphocytes is described. This antigen was characterized with alloantisera in the two-stage microcytotoxicity test and designated as ELy-1 antigen. The frequency of ELy-1 antigen positive animals in various populations is close to 50%. ELy-1 shows an autosomal, dominant inheritance. Effect of experimental uterine tube occlusion on plasma penicillin concentrations following intrauterine instillation in pony mares. PREVIOUS studies have shown that instillation of sodium benzylpenicillin into the uterine lumen of ponies in small volumes is followed by peak plasma concentrations of the antibiotic in 10to 15 mins (Allen 1978; Allen and Clarke 1978). However, the assumption that the circulating penicillin is absorbed only through the endometrium is questionable because Allen, Kessy and Noakes (1979) concluded that the intrauterine instillation of phenolsulphonphthalein was followed by absorption of the dye from the peritoneal cavity, after passage along the uterine tubes.

Multiple congenital heart anomalies in five Arabian foals. Five Arabian or half-Arabian foals with suspected multiple cardiac anomalies were examined. Various combinations of clinical examination, electrocardiography, angiocardiography, cardiac catheterization, blood gas analysis, radiography, and echocardiography resulted in clinical data that allowed accurate antemortem diagnoses to be made. In 4 cases, the clinical diagnosis was substantiated by postmortem findings. Clinical bronchography in the horse: development of a method using barium sulphate powder. A method for performing bronchography in standing nonanaesthetized horses was developed. Bronchography was performed by insufflating the previously intubated trachea with a mixture of 120 to 200 g of finely powdered barium sulphate mixed with 3 to 7 g of powdered methyl cellulose. The mixture was delivered from an ether vaporiser into which compressed air was blown. Premedication with atropine sulphate immediately before insufflation minimised bronchoconstriction. Enzyme activities and protein concentration in the intraocular fluids of ten mammals. An attempt was made to establish normal values for the total protein concentrations and the enzyme activities of LDH, MDH and PGI in the intraocular fluids of rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, dogs, sheep, cattle, pigs, horses and humans. Remarkably little species differences were noted in 9 of the 10 mammals with vitreal enzyme activities falling into a narrow range between 8.4 U/l (PGI, horse) and 92.4 U/l (MDH, guinea pig). Equine lymphocyte antigens in a Welsh pony family. Lymphocytes from an extended family of Welsh ponies were tested in a microcytotoxicity test against Thoroughbred and Arabian horse-derived antisera, which defined 4 and 6 equine lymphocyte antigen (ELA) specificities, respectively. Mixed leukocyte culture (MLC) tests were also performed. Welsh pony lymphocytes reacted to the Thoroughbred antisera. A comparison of chemical and electrophoretic methods of serum protein determinations in clinically normal domestic animals of various ages. The biuret total protein method and a bromcresol green (BCG) albumin method were used on the Abbott ABA-100 chemistry analyzer to assay serum proteins in clinically normal cattle, sheep, ponies, pigs, and ducks. Observations on the isoenzymes of creatine kinase in equine serum and tissues. The isoenzymes of creatine kinase have been measured in serum and selected tissues from horses. The distribution followed that reported in other species in that the MM dimer of the isoenzyme was present in voluntary and non-voluntary muscle, thyroid, liver, spleen, lung and intestine. The BB dimer of the isoenzyme was predominant in brain, pancreas, kidney, intestine, lung, spleen, liver and thyroid. Serum protein electrophoresis in horses and ponies. A method of electrophoresis of horse serum on agarose gels (pH 8.6) is described, together with a system for interpreting changes in the electrophoretic zones based upon the relative distribution of the major serum proteins. Differences in the protein composition of the individual electrophoretic zones of horses and ponies were recorded, although this variation probably reflects differences in management and the presence of subclinical disease.
Mononuclear phagocytes of peritoneal fluid. Cells in the peritoneal fluid from 179 horses were examined in Giemsa stained preparations using light microscopy. Mononuclear phagocytes were a common cell type observed in normal fluids. In the absence of stimulation they were morphologically similar to the peripheral blood monocyte and the unstimulated mesothelial cell. Variation in arbovirus infection rates in species of birds sampled in a serological survey during an encephalitis epidemic in the Murray Valley of South-eastern Australia, February 1974. There was extensive and exuberant breeding of waterbirds before and during an epidemic of arboviral encephalitis in the Murray Valley of south eastern Australia in 1974. Connective tissue composition of the equine sarcoid. The connective tissue composition and organisation of the "equine sarcoid" was compared with that of normal adult equine skin to determine whether the cells which produce their respective connective tissue matrices show similar biosynthetic characteristics. No major qualitative difference could be found between the collagen compositions of skin and sarcoid material, although the organisation into fibres of Type III collagen in the sarcoid was markedly greater than that of skin.
Influence of photoperiod on the pregnant and postpartum mare. Over a 2-year period, mares (n = 32) of predominantly Quarter Horse breeding and their foals were used to study the effects of photoperiod on reproduction during the periparturient period. Experimental equine aflatoxicosis. Adult male Shetland ponies, two per dose level, were given aflatoxin daily at levels of 0.3, 0.15, or 0.075 mg/kg. Signs of toxicosis included inappetence, depression, tremors, and terminal prostration. Deaths occurred at 12 and 16 days (0.3 mg/kg), 25 and 32 days (0.15 mg/kg), and 36 and 39 days (0.075 mg/kg).
