Cross cantering is an unbalanced gait that horses often display on the lunge or under saddle. Also called a disunited canter, cross cantering happens when a horse’s front legs pick up one canter lead while the hind legs pick up the other.

This habit is common in young or green horses who are still learning how to balance and carry a rider while cantering. Rider imbalance, incorrect timing of cues, and ill-fitting tack can further disrupt coordination.

When a horse is cross cantering, the stride feels choppy and unbalanced. While it may be alarming the first time it happens, it is usually easy to fix with the right approach.

What Is Cross Cantering?

The canter is a three-beat, asymmetrical gait with distinct leads. Instead of the horse’s legs moving in mirrored pairs the way they do at the walk and trot, the footfalls land in a distinct pattern that determines which canter lead a horse is on. [1]

In a proper canter, the hind leg on the same side as the leading front leg reaches further forward than its partner, following what is known as a transverse sequence. This produces a smooth, rocking motion that feels balanced to riders. [1]

Cross cantering happens when this pattern breaks down between the front end and the hind end. The two halves of the horse stop working toward the same lead. [2][3]

When a horse cross canters, the hind leg on the opposite side reaches further instead, so the leading limbs no longer line up on the same side front to back. This reversed pattern is called a rotary sequence. The mismatch of a rotary sequence creates the unbalanced feeling riders describe when a horse cross canters under saddle. [1]

Cross cantering is known by more than one name. Trainers often call it cross-firing, and veterinarians and biomechanics researchers tend to call it a disunited canter. All three terms describe the same gait fault.

Cross Cantering vs. an Incorrect Lead

Cross cantering should be distinguished from other canter patterns, including the wrong lead and counter-canter. The important difference is whether the front and hind limbs are using the same lead.

A horse on the wrong lead is still performing a united canter with the front and hind limbs on the same lead. The problem is that the lead does not correspond to the direction of travel.

For example, a horse traveling to the left would normally canter on the left lead. If both the front and hind limbs are on the right lead, the horse is on the wrong lead but is not cross cantering. [1][4]

In comparison, in a cross canter, the front and hind limbs are on opposite leads. For example, the horse may be on the left lead in front and the right lead behind. This creates a disunited canter.

Counter-canter is different from both patterns. The horse is deliberately asked to remain on the outside lead while changing direction or traveling on a curved line. The front and hind limbs remain on the same lead. Trainers use counter-canter to develop balance, straightness, and strength. [2][3]

Cross Canter Causes

Cross cantering typically results from multiple factors. In most cases, it reflect a need for further training and balance in the horse. It can also be related to pain, discomfort or tack and equipment issues.

Balance & Strength Issues

The most common reason a horse cross-canters is a lack of balance or hind strength required to organize a canter departure or hold a bend through a turn.

A canter with enough engagement from behind gives a horse the ability to shorten and rebalance the stride as needed. As collection increases, speed changes come almost entirely from adjustments in stride length rather than stride duration. [5]

This pattern occurs when a horse uses their hindquarters to remain balanced during speed changes. A horse that has not developed enough strength to support the control required for this movement tends to fall onto the forehand through a turn or departure. The hind end can then lag or swap onto the wrong lead independently of the front.

Rider Position, Timing & Aids

Riders contribute to cross cantering more often than they may realize. A weak or late outside leg may allow the hindquarters to drift or fail to follow the front end onto the new lead. [2]

A rider with a crooked or unbalanced seat can have a similar effect, since horses tend to shift their own balance to compensate for riders with an uneven seat. [6][7]

Asking for the canter through a sharp turn, before the horse is straight and moving forward, is one of the most reliable ways to produce a cross canter.

Pain, Lameness, or Physical Discomfort

Cross cantering is sometimes the horse’s way of avoiding a movement that hurts. Research tracking pain responses has shown that spontaneous lead changes during canter are not typical in comfortable, non-lame horses. [8]

For this reason, horses that repeatedly cross-canter or cross-fire may be signaling:

Pain may be the underlying cause of cross cantering especially when the pattern is consistent in one direction, appears suddenly, or worsens over time.

Saddle & Tack Fit

Poor saddle fit can contribute to back discomfort, asymmetry, and changes in movement, including irregularities at the canter. [6]

A saddle that pinches at the withers, bridges across the back, or sits unevenly from side to side can make it physically difficult for a horse to engage its hindquarters evenly. Under saddle, that often shows up as reluctance or a disunited stride. [6]

Natural Laterality & One-Sidedness

Most horses favor one side over the other. This natural one-sidedness does not cause cross cantering on its own, but it can make the behavior more obvious on one side. There are consistent patterns in perceived sidedness, including horses that struggle more with bending and circling in one direction than the other. [7]

A horse that is already weaker or stiffer on one side is more likely to lose the lead behind when asked to canter toward their weaker or more challenging direction. This is especially true if straightness training has not addressed that asymmetry directly.

How to Recognize Cross Cantering

Cross cantering may not be obvious the first time it happens, especially to a less experienced rider in the saddle. The stride tends to feel short and choppy, and the horse often struggles to hold a bend or stay balanced through a turn.

Instead of the rocking, three-beat rhythm of a united canter, riders often describe a bumpy, uneven sensation, as though the horse cannot decide which way it wants to go.

From the ground, cross cantering is usually easier to spot. Watch the front legs and hind legs separately as the horse moves through a corner or circle.

In a cross canter, the front legs reach toward one direction while the hind legs track toward the other, which gives the horse’s body a slightly twisted or crooked look through the turn. [2][4]

This gait fault is often most visible on a circle. A horse holding the correct lead in front but swapping behind looks like it is falling in or drifting out through the hindquarters.

Other Canter Faults

Comparing the kinematics of the leading and trailing limbs during a normal canter stride has shown that the two sides move through different joint angles and timing within a single stride. [9]

The front and hind ends coordinate through a specific pattern. It does not take much of a mismatch for cross cantering to feel and look distinct from a normal canter once a rider knows what to check. But spotting any canter fault by eye takes practice. [4][10]

Cross cantering is sometimes confused with a four-beat canter, where the gait loses its clear three-beat rhythm. The two faults look similar from a distance, but they come from different mechanics. A four-beat canter usually points to:

  • Tension
  • A hollow back
  • A horse rushing forward

This canter fault is also distinct from a correct four-beat gallop. Studies that classify horse gaits by footfall timing have found that canter and gallop, both asymmetrical gaits, are among the hardest to tell apart by timing alone. [4]

Is Cross Cantering a Safety or Soundness Concern?

Occasional cross cantering in a green or unbalanced horse is a normal part of learning to canter under saddle. However, riders should take repeated cross cantering seriously because it can indicate weakness, imbalance, discomfort, or a training issue that affects how the horse loads and coordinates their body. During a normal canter, the hind limbs do not perform the same role. The trailing hindlimb works especially hard to stabilize the stride and help push the horse forward. [1] When the front and hind ends are on different leads, the horse is no longer organizing that workload in the usual way. [1] Persistent cross cantering places uneven demands on the horse’s body and should prompt the rider to identify the cause.

When Cross Cantering May Signal Pain

Non-lame horses typically don’t spontaneously change leads in front or behind during the canter. That does not mean every cross-cantering horse is in pain. Plenty of green, unbalanced, or crooked horses cross-canter for purely mechanical reasons. [8]

A horse that consistently cross-canters is worth watching closely for other signs of discomfort. Riders should be especially alert if the pattern always appears in the same direction or develops suddenly in a horse that did not previously cross-canter. [8]

When to Call the Veterinarian

Riders should bring in a veterinarian if their horse’s cross cantering is new or worsening. Other signs paired with cross cantering that warrant a veterinary evaluation include:

  • Reluctance to pick up a particular lead
  • Stumbling
  • Bucking into the canter
  • Sudden resistance

A lameness exam can confirm or rule out a physical cause. The veterinarian may assess the horse in hand and under saddle, evaluate the back and limbs, and use diagnostic imaging or nerve blocks if needed to localize the source of pain.

How to Fix Cross Cantering

Getting your horse back into a proper canter involves building balance, straightness, and strength. There are a few exercises that work best in combination when addressing cross cantering.

Correction in the Moment

When a horse cross-canters, the most effective response is also the simplest. Bring the horse back down to trot, re-establish rhythm and balance, and ask for the canter again. [2]

Trying to fix the lead mid-stride by grabbing at the reins or kicking harder almost always makes the imbalance worse. A calm, prompt downward transition followed by a clean upward transition teaches the horse to reorganize its own balance, rather than muscle through an unbalanced stride. [2]

Building Balance Through Transitions

Frequent, well-timed transitions are among the most useful tools to help correct a horse that cross-canters under saddle. [2]

Canter-trot-canter and canter-walk-canter transitions on a 20-meter circle ask the horse to engage the hind end and rebalance repeatedly in a short space. This repetition builds the strength and coordination needed to maintain a united canter. [2]

Riding these transitions on both reins, rather than favoring the horse’s easier direction, helps address natural asymmetries and weaknesses in the horse’s body. [1][7]

Straightness & Counter-Canter Training

Straightness work addresses the underlying one-sidedness that makes many horses more likely to cross canter in one direction than the other. Building straightness through shoulder-fore, leg-yield, and other lateral work pays off well beyond the canter. [7]

Counter-canter is very effective, but the horse needs to have well-developed balance to attempt it. Holding a united outside lead through corners and turns demands exactly the coordination between the front and hind ends that a cross-cantering horse has not yet developed. [11]

Addressing Saddle Fit & Physical Causes

If saddle fit, pain, or lameness is identified as a contributing factor, no amount of flatwork will fully resolve cross cantering on its own. Horses generally return to consistent, united canter work much faster once the physical cause has actually been addressed, rather than trained around. [6][8]

Cross Cantering Across Riding Disciplines

Cross cantering can occur in any discipline, although it may look different depending on the maneuver the horse is performing.

Dressage

In dressage, straightness and correct leads are directly assessed, so cross cantering shows up as an obvious scoring fault rather than a subtle one.

Training guidance on canter leads and lead changes emphasizes that a correct canter departure and a straight, balanced horse are prerequisites before more advanced canter work is introduced. International dressage rules call for canter work that stays straight, rhythmic, and consistent through changes of direction. [2][3]

These standards are why correct leads are treated as foundational rather than optional in a dressage training program.

Jumping & Eventing

Cross cantering shows up most often in jumping disciplines right after landing from a fence. This is especially common when a horse lands crooked or unbalanced before a related distance or a turn to the next line. [12][13]

A horse that lands cross-cantered has to reorganize itself mid-course, which costs time, rhythm, and sometimes a rail. [14]

Riders in jumping disciplines usually address cross cantering the same way dressage riders do. They improve the quality and straightness of the canter on the flat with gymnastic exercises so it holds up better under the added demand of fences. [12][13]

Western & Trail Riding

In western disciplines such as reining and western pleasure, cross cantering is scored as a clear fault in a pattern class. [15][16]

Outside the show ring, cross cantering on a trail ride is less about scoring and more about comfort and balance. This matters most on uneven footing, where an already unbalanced stride is more likely to lead to a stumble.

In both settings, the underlying fix is the same one that applies in English disciplines. A straighter, better-balanced horse is far less likely to cross canter in the first place. [12][13]

Managing and Correcting Cross Cantering

Cross cantering occurs when the horse takes one canter lead in front and the opposite lead behind. It tends to happen when a green, weak, or unbalanced horse loses coordination during a transition, circle, or turn. Rider imbalance, poorly timed aids, natural asymmetry, and saddle fit can also interfere with a united canter.

When a horse begins to cross canter, return to the trot, re-establish a steady rhythm, and ask for a new canter departure. Stronger rein or leg aids are not recommended, as these increase tension and make balance more difficult.

Long-term correction depends on developing strength, straightness, and balance. Canter transitions, lateral work, large circles, and appropriately introduced counter-canter exercises help improve hindquarter strength and control.
