Algae are a diverse group of photosynthetic organisms found in marine and freshwater environments. In animal nutrition, the term “algae” typically refers to microalgae (such as Chlorella or Schizochytrium) or macroalgae (such as kelp or other seaweeds) processed into meal, powder, or oil forms. Algae-based ingredients may be cultivated in controlled environments and harvested for their concentrated nutritional value.

In equine feed and supplements, algae are used for their rich content of nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids (particularly DHA), trace minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Some forms, particularly microalgae, are included as plant-based alternatives to fish oil for supplying long-chain omega-3s. Macroalgae like kelp may be used as natural sources of iodine and other ocean-derived minerals.
