Alpha Lipoic Acid - Feed Ingredient

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA), also known as thioctic acid, is a naturally occurring organosulfur compound derived from octanoic acid. It functions as a coenzyme in mitochondrial energy metabolism, particularly in oxidative decarboxylation reactions. In feed and supplement formulations, ALA is typically synthesized and included in its stable form for oral administration.

In equine nutrition, alpha lipoic acid is used selectively in specialty supplements, particularly those designed for metabolic support or antioxidant inclusion. ALA exhibits both water- and fat-soluble antioxidant properties, allowing it to interact with a broad range of free radicals and regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E. However, it is not considered an essential nutrient for horses and is not commonly included in standard feed formulations.
