Ammonium Hydroxide - Feed Ingredient
Ammonium hydroxide is a chemical compound formed by dissolving ammonia gas (NH₃) in water, resulting in a solution that contains ammonium ions (NH₄⁺) and hydroxide ions (OH⁻). In feed and food processing, ammonium hydroxide is primarily used as a pH adjuster, processing aid, or antimicrobial agent rather than as a direct nutrient source.
In equine feed production, ammonium hydroxide may be used during the treatment or processing of certain ingredients—such as in the alkali treatment of low-quality forages or byproducts—to improve digestibility or alter chemical composition. Its role is strictly functional, and it is not included as a nutrient additive in finished feeds.
While approved for specific applications in feed manufacturing under regulated conditions, ammonium hydroxide is not commonly used or required in typical equine diets.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Ammonium Hydroxide as an ingredient.
