Ammonium lignosulfonate is a byproduct derived from the sulfite pulping process, where lignin is broken down from wood. It is processed into various forms such as dry powders, granules, and concentrated aqueous solutions. Each form retains the characteristic chemical structure of lignin, featuring sulfonate groups and associated ammonium ions, which impart binding and dispersing properties useful in a range of industrial applications.
In animal nutrition, ammonium lignosulfonate is used as a pellet binder and conditioner.
