Animal Fat - Feed Ingredient
Animal fat refers to lipids derived from the tissues of livestock animals such as cattle, swine, or poultry. These fats are typically obtained during meat processing through rendering, a process that involves cooking down animal tissues to separate fat from protein and moisture. The final product is a purified fat that may be solid or semi-solid at room temperature, depending on its fatty acid composition.
In equine nutrition, animal fat is primarily used as a concentrated energy source. It offers more than twice the caloric density of carbohydrates or protein, making it useful in high-energy diets or for horses with increased caloric demands. Animal fats are also included to enhance palatability and reduce dustiness in textured or pelleted feeds. Although horses are herbivores and do not naturally consume animal fat, small quantities are generally considered safe.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Animal Fat as an ingredient.
