Antioxidants - Feed Ingredient

Antioxidants refer to compounds included in feed formulations to prevent the oxidative degradation of nutrients, particularly fats and fat-soluble vitamins. These blends typically can contain a mix of synthetic and/or natural antioxidants, such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), ethoxyquin, tocopherols (Vitamin E), ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), and citric acid. The specific formulation can vary based on the intended application, regulatory considerations, and desired shelf life of the feed product.

In equine nutrition, antioxidant blends are primarily used to stabilize feed ingredients during processing and storage. Oxidation can lead to rancidity, off-flavors, and the degradation of sensitive nutrients, which can negatively affect palatability and nutritional quality. The use of an antioxidant blend helps maintain the integrity of fats, oils, and vitamins, ensuring consistent product performance and nutrient delivery.

While some antioxidants in the blend may contribute marginally to the horse’s dietary intake of these nutrients, their primary function in feed is preservative rather than nutritional.
