Apple Cider Vinegar - Feed Ingredient
Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a fermented liquid made from crushed apples that have undergone alcoholic and acetic acid fermentation. The final product is a dilute solution of acetic acid, typically containing around 5% acidity, along with trace compounds such as vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols derived from the apple substrate. In equine applications, ACV is typically used in liquid form as a feed additive or supplement.
In equine nutrition, apple cider vinegar is included for its potential functional properties rather than as a nutrient source. It may be used to enhance palatability, assist in managing feed hygiene in water or mashes, or support digestive conditions due to its mild acidifying effects. It is occasionally incorporated into oral formulations or top-dress supplements aimed at supporting gastrointestinal function.
There are no significant toxicity concerns associated with apple cider vinegar when used at low inclusion rates. However, due to its acetic acid content, excessive or undiluted use may irritate the gastrointestinal tract or dental surfaces.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Apple Cider Vinegar as an ingredient.
