Apple Pomace - Feed Ingredient
Apple pomace is the solid byproduct remaining after the pressing of apples for juice or cider production. It consists primarily of the fruit’s skin, pulp, seeds, and stems. The composition of apple pomace can vary depending on the apple variety and processing method but generally includes fiber, residual sugars, and small amounts of vitamins and minerals.
In equine nutrition, apple pomace is used as a palatable, fibrous ingredient that contributes to dietary bulk and moisture. It may be included in pelleted feeds, treats, or mashes to enhance flavor and texture. While not a significant source of protein or fat, its residual sugar content can provide a small amount of digestible energy.
Apple pomace is typically dried and ground before inclusion in feed products. It is generally considered safe for horses when used in moderation. However, due to its natural sugar content, its use may be limited in diets formulated for horses with metabolic concerns such as insulin resistance or laminitis.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Apple Pomace as an ingredient.
