Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera) - Feed Ingredient
Ashwagandha, also known by its botanical name Withania somnifera, is a perennial shrub native to India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. It is classified as an adaptogen due to its traditional use in supporting the body’s response to physical and emotional stress. The root is the most commonly used part of the plant and contains key bioactive constituents such as withanolides, alkaloids, and sitoindosides.
In equine nutrition, ashwagandha is used as a botanical additive, typically in powdered root or standardized extract form. It may be included in calming, performance, or wellness supplements aimed at horses exposed to stress or demanding workloads. Ashwagandha is not a source of essential nutrients but is added for its functional phytochemical properties.
Although research in horses is limited, it is generally considered safe when used in low to moderate amounts.
