Attapulgite Clay - Feed Ingredient
Attapulgite Clay, also known as palygorskite, is a naturally occurring magnesium aluminum phyllosilicate mineral characterized by its unique crystalline structure. It is commonly found in sedimentary deposits, particularly in regions such as the southeastern United States. The clay’s distinctive lattice structure gives it a high surface area and a strong ability to adsorb liquids and toxins.
In equine feed applications, Attapulgite Clay is typically included as a feed additive to act as a binding and anti-caking agent, as well as to aid in stabilizing the digestive environment. Its absorptive qualities allow it to bind to excess moisture, toxins, and other undesirable substances in the gastrointestinal tract. This can be useful in reducing the effects of digestive disturbances associated with feed transitions or ingestion of harmful microbes or compounds.
While it is generally recognized as safe when used in appropriate amounts, excessive inclusion rates could interfere with the absorption of certain nutrients, minerals or medications.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Attapulgite Clay as an ingredient.
