Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is an aromatic annual herb from the Lamiaceae (mint) family, cultivated primarily for its leaves, which contain essential oils such as linalool, eugenol, and methyl chavicol. These compounds are responsible for the plant’s characteristic fragrance and flavor. In feed applications, basil may be included in dried or powdered form, or as an essential oil extract.

In equine nutrition, basil is occasionally used as a natural flavoring agent in treats, herbal blends, or specialty feed products. Its inclusion can enhance palatability and may help mask the taste of less desirable ingredients.
