Beet Molasses - Feed Ingredient
Dried beet molasses is a feed ingredient derived from the concentrated syrup left after sugar extraction from sugar beets. After removal of most of the sugar, the remaining liquid—rich in residual sugars and minerals—is dried into a powder or granulated form for use in animal feeds. This byproduct retains a sweet flavor and a moderate nutritional profile.
In equine nutrition, dried beet molasses is primarily used to enhance palatability and provide calories. It may also contribute trace amounts of minerals, especially potassium and calcium, depending on the refinement process. Compared to liquid molasses, the dried form offers ease of handling and stability in pelleted or textured feed products.
Due to its sugar content, dried beet molasses should be used cautiously in horses with metabolic sensitivities, such as insulin resistance, equine metabolic syndrome, or laminitis. Inclusion rates are generally low and used to support flavor and feed intake rather than as a major nutrient source.
