Beetroot Juice - Feed Ingredient
Beetroot juice is the liquid extracted from the root of the beet plant (Beta vulgaris), typically derived from sugar beets or red beet varieties. It is naturally rich in nitrates, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. The juice retains a significant portion of the sugars present in the raw beet, making it a concentrated energy source. It is often used in human nutrition for its potential benefits in promoting circulation and endurance, but its use in livestock and equine feed is more specialized.
In equine diets, beetroot juice is sometimes considered as a supplement due to its nitrate content, which may support blood flow and oxygen delivery in performance horses. However, its high sugar concentration makes it unsuitable for horses prone to metabolic conditions such as insulin resistance, equine metabolic syndrome (EMS), or laminitis. While not a common feed ingredient, beetroot juice may occasionally be included in feed formulations as a natural flavoring or coloring agent.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Beetroot Juice as an ingredient.
