Beta Glucan - Feed Ingredient
Beta Glucan refers to a group of soluble dietary fibers composed of β-D-glucose polysaccharides, found in the cell walls of cereals such as oats and barley, as well as in yeast, fungi, and some types of algae. The structure and source of beta glucan influence its viscosity and physiological effects.
In equine nutrition, beta glucans are primarily included for their functional properties rather than as nutrient sources. From cereal sources (like oats), beta glucans may contribute to digestive viscosity and glycemic regulation, while yeast-derived beta glucans are commonly added to supplements for their potential immunomodulatory effects. These fibers may help support the intestinal barrier and stimulate aspects of the innate immune response.
The inclusion of beta glucan in feed or supplements depends on the intended application—cereal-derived beta glucans are naturally present in ingredients like oat bran, while purified yeast beta glucans are added in small, measured amounts
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Beta Glucan as an ingredient.
