Betaine - Feed Ingredient
Betaine, also known as trimethylglycine, is a naturally occurring compound derived from sugar beet processing or other plant sources. It is structurally characterized by the presence of three methyl groups attached to a glycine backbone. In equine nutrition, betaine is used both as a methyl donor and as an osmolyte.
As a methyl donor, betaine participates in biochemical pathways involving the transfer of methyl groups, supporting functions such as homocysteine metabolism and synthesis of compounds like creatine and phosphatidylcholine. As an osmolyte, it helps maintain cellular hydration and integrity under osmotic stress. Betaine is typically included in powdered or pelleted feed formulations and may also appear in electrolyte or performance supplements.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Betaine as an ingredient.
