Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) - Feed Ingredient
Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is a synthetic antioxidant used in animal feed to prevent the oxidative degradation of fats and fat-soluble vitamins. Chemically, it is a mixture of two isomeric organic compounds and is classified as a phenolic antioxidant. BHA is fat-soluble and heat-stable, making it suitable for use in feed manufacturing processes such as pelleting.
In equine nutrition, BHA is used in small quantities as a preservative to extend the shelf life of feed ingredients and finished products. It helps maintain the nutritional quality of fats and oils by inhibiting rancidity, which can negatively affect feed palatability and safety. BHA does not contribute nutritional value to the diet and is included solely for its functional role in feed stability.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) as an ingredient.
