Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) - Feed Ingredient
Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a synthetic, fat-soluble antioxidant used in animal feed to prevent the oxidative degradation of fats, oils, and fat-soluble vitamins. It is structurally related to butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and functions by inhibiting free radical formation, thereby slowing the process of rancidity and nutrient breakdown in feed ingredients.
In equine nutrition, BHT is included in small quantities as a preservative to maintain the stability and shelf life of feeds containing fats and fat-soluble compounds such as vitamins A and E. It is especially useful in pelleted or extruded feeds, where heat and storage conditions can accelerate oxidation.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) as an ingredient.
