Calcium Citrate - Feed Ingredient

Calcium citrate is a highly bioavailable form of calcium used in equine nutrition to support bone development, muscle function, and enzymatic activity. It is the calcium salt of citric acid and is more soluble than other calcium sources, such as calcium carbonate, particularly in low-acid environments. This increased solubility may enhance calcium absorption in horses with compromised digestion or those on grain-based diets with lower gastric acidity.

In equine diets, calcium citrate is included in mineral supplements and fortified feeds to help maintain proper calcium-to-phosphorus balance, which is essential for skeletal health. It may be beneficial for young, growing horses, lactating mares, and performance horses with higher calcium demands. While calcium citrate offers better absorption compared to some other calcium sources, it is typically used in combination with other calcium compounds to meet overall dietary requirements efficiently.
