Carrots - Feed Ingredient

Carrots (Daucus carota) are a root vegetable commonly fed to horses as a treat or supplemental feed ingredient. They are primarily composed of water and contain moderate amounts of carbohydrates, with natural sugars that contribute to their palatability. Carrots also provide small amounts of essential nutrients, including beta-carotene, a precursor to Vitamin A, which supports vision, immune function, and skin health in horses.

In feed formulations, carrots may be included for their natural palatability, encouraging feed intake in picky eaters. They can also serve as a source of natural antioxidants and moisture in specialized feed products. While they are not a significant source of fiber or protein, carrots can contribute to dietary variety and be incorporated into pelleted or textured feeds. Due to their sugar content, they should be used in moderation, particularly for horses with insulin resistance or equine metabolic syndrome (EMS).
