Chia seeds are the small, oval seeds of Salvia hispanica, a plant native to Central America. They are valued for their high content of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

In equine diets, chia seeds are typically included to contribute to the overall nutrient profile, especially as a plant-based source of essential fatty acids. They contain a blend of soluble and insoluble fiber, which may support digestive health. When soaked or exposed to moisture, chia seeds form a mucilaginous gel, which can aid in hydration or support digestion.
