Chlorophyll - Feed Ingredient
Chlorophyll is the green pigment naturally found in plants and algae that plays a central role in photosynthesis. Chemically, it is a porphyrin-based compound containing a central magnesium ion. Commercial chlorophyll used in feed or supplements is typically extracted from sources such as alfalfa, spinach, or mulberry leaves.
In equine nutrition, chlorophyll is occasionally included in feed additives or botanical supplements, often in the form of sodium copper chlorophyllin—a water-soluble, stabilized derivative. It may be used for its coloring properties or for traditional uses associated with deodorizing or antioxidant functions.
